You could write to the Army and ask if they'll let you ride the byways on Foulness (Artillery testing ground). You have to ring their local pub and book your lunch if you are allowed on, as they don't get many visitors.

We went to look at The Broomway when we weren't supposed to and some civilian security guard came screaming up in a landrover and led us back where we were supposed to be. It was covered in chained up bombs, shells and missiles that they'd dredged up and didn't want floating off again.

Shame you aren't going on a Sunday or you could nip up the road to here whilst you are there:

But it would be rude not to nip down the coast to Bawdsey while you are following early Radar:

Not just WW2 but there is lots to see here also on your way back south:

I've posted this before, it might be of interest.

I don't know if many people know about this map layer that shows all the defences dotted around the British Isles.

To select this layer click on the Add Content button on the Places menu, click Education, and tick the Defence of Britan box.

The screen shot below is of the SE coast, if you click on the sites, on Google Earth, it comes up with an information panel telling you a bit about the site.

Interesting what's on your doorstep........
