They've recently had a price drop, from Garmin £50 for a one-time update, £75 for lifetime. The latter is for the lifetime of the GPS, not yours 
However, through an Amazon seller you can get the lifetime update for £55.
Wish I'd done more research last year when I did a one-time update, was more then anyway and I purchased from Garmin not realising I could have got a better deal elsewhere

I'm picking up a Zumo 550 from panterg of this parish on Friday, and I'll go with Garmin for the upgrade. The Amazon reviews were mixed, to say the least

Actually I think you will find it's the lifetime of the GPS and your ownership of it. In other words, you can not transfer future map upgrades to a new user if you sell the GPS.

I meant that if you die before the GPS then your wife/children can continue to benefit from the updates, hence the smiley...

Open Street Map
Downloaded the maps for Thailand and most of S E Asia from open street map. Not sure how it fares against the others but for free you can't knock it. A little hassle involved with putting it on your 550 but well worth it, using the software on the laptop you can add POI's to the global community.
