After reading various threads about ECU remaps I’m thinking of contacting hilltop motorcycles to discuss options. I’ve got previous experience of BB Power Chips, Techlusion TFI and Power Commander PC III devices fitted to 1150 engines. Hilltop motorcycles are apparently the only company that are able to remap the stock ECU. An OEM ECU remap sounds like the best, neatest and reliable method of adjusting fuelling and increasing performance and\or efficiency. More BHP and MPG and no nasty external boxes and ECU internal modifications required.

My bike runs very rich but I believe the majority of bikes run lean from the factory which is only enhanced when aftermarket exhausts systems are fitted. There’s been posts on here about holed pistons from lean running bikes:eek

If I could arrange a group buy would anyone be interested?:nenau

Keen to get mine sorted soon before I blow another exhaust apart:blast

Yes I would! Would it be ok on a standardish engine? Im waiting till my engine needs more work till I can justify rs pistons and flowed heads, did your power commander just die?

Excellent. Had a couple of PM’s as well. Will contact hilltop and report back.

PCIII stopped working after a very short amount of time – maybe 3000 miles. The standard of wiring is poor and clearly not designed for all weather biking. The inline adapters are messy too – far too many wires exposed near the throttle bodies.

I’m convinced that an ECU remap is the best way to go – ideally with a backup in case the ECU gets wiped or fails in the future. I’m planning on modify my bike further so will also discuss options re: a later remap. I'm also going to look into wether its possible to have switchable maps - a leaner map for motorways and a sportier map for the good roads.

Having two maps should be easy, that's what BMW and bb power do anyway, looking at the other options there's more scope for things to go wrong, I've been trying to find a company who can re flash the ecu for awhile, people with cars can buy the stuff over the counter, a few websites dedicated to it, really interested

You won't be disappointed, mine runs much better, midrange toque mmmmm! :thumb

Not sure on cost yet. I believe that the standard price is somewhere in the region of £350. Had quite a bit of interest so I'm going to propose the idea of a whole day of BMW setup. Will confirm once I know:)

Still works out cheaper then a power commander, I take its the standard BMW chip? So I can sell my bb power chip? I full day means they can properly do I base run for standard bikes then just tweak the map for more tuned bikes, any news on the dual map idea? Sounds a good idea to have power and performance maps.

Spoken to Hilltop today. Jeff sounds knowledgeable and enthusiastic and has a great deal of experience of working on BMW’s. Any fuel injected BMW can be remapped – including R1200’s. He has previously done group buys for other bike forums so is up for the idea. I have agreed to head over on Saturday morning to discuss further. Will post results on Saturday but it looks like we’re on:)

Yes. I visited hilltop motorcycles early on Saturday morning and followed it up with a quick trip to Mallory Park:)

Despite an earlier telephone conversation it would seem that a group discount isn’t really of interest. The best I could get is that they might do something for a group of 4 bikes but I was unable to pin down just what this discount would be.

I had an initial assessment dyno run which was good value at £30. This showed BHP and torque along with air fuel ratios across the rev range. I previously had a PCIII fitted with a custom map but after the power commander failed the bike reverted to the stock map which obviously wasn’t correct. The dyno run confirmed this. With the PCIII fitted and a custom map, the bike was making 97bhp at the rear wheel. The standard map was putting out 75bhp at the rear wheel with power dropping off alarmingly at 5500rpm.

I decided to have the work carried out anyway. The ECU was flashed with after market firmware that enables the fuelling to be totally adjusted – just like the power commander software but to finer detail – 250rpm increments. After a number of further dyno runs and adjustments the bike revved clearly all the way to the red line and put out 96bhp with loads more torque. I’ll get the print outs scanned and post up the results tomorrow.

Net result is that the bike feels much faster with much cleaner throttle response. Whilst expensive I think it represents a good saving over a power commander and custom map plus the standard ECU has the added benefit of improved reliability – i.e. no external box or wiring to fail. If you are planning on keeping the bike or modifying exhausts etc I think it makes a worthwhile investment.

Word is catching on and whilst there for around 2hrs they received numerous phone calls from interested BMW riders.
