I've just tried some Luster Laces (yeah daft name but then that's the Yanks for you).
They are strips of fairly rough cloth impregnated with a metal polish and come in a variety of different widths. You can buy replacement polish to re-impregnate the strips if you wish but I think that a tube of Solvol will do just as well.
You just put a turn around the item to be polished and pull backwards and forwards. Particularly good for cleaning spokes and exhausts.
Not as abrasive as steel-wool but once you've done the hard work they do a reasonable job of keeping the pipes from turning brown and make it easy too.
This is about 15 minutes effort, the first polishing in 12 months.
Available from Amazon among others.
