Hi,

Had a fairly unpleasant experience this morning on my '04 1150 gsa twin spark and am after any suggestions how to identify and fox the problem.

Have recently had the bike fully serviced nad was running like a dream up until about a week ago. Since then it runs sweet as a nut when when warm but has started to stall when cold.

It usually starts first time with nio need for the fast idle but can then cut out at any time, until it's warmed up, without warning. This can happen when it's idling at a junction or riding at slow spped ie. 1st gear. This morning I went to pull out onto a main road and it cut out on me. Needless to say I nearly filled my pants.

I've noticed that when it stalled it's a complete b*tch to get to start again as the starter motor turns over but it doesn't catch unless I seriously wind on the throttle.

I've done or checked the following:

1. Replaced the battery and use an optimate as it has an alarm fitted.
2. Checked the throttle cables to make sure theor seated correctly.
3. Checked that it idles correctly when warm
4. Physically checked for air leaks around the tb.

I've yet to check the plugs and stick coils which I'll do at the weekend. Does this sound like a stick coil problem. The bike as done 35k and I beleive they ar ethe original.

I need to get this fixed as it is getting potentially dangerous and will take ti to a specialist if I can't fix it. However I'd rather do it myself and save the cash if possible. Conversely i don't want to drop £150 on two new stick coils if it's not likely to be that but am tempted to do this as a precaution as it can't hurt.:blast

I did check the forum and it sounds like it could be stick coils but any thoughts/ similiar experiences much appreciated.

I think ...

It usually starts first time with nio need for the fast idle ...

... it's you ! The fast idle lever is there for a reason; use it until you get one bar on the temp scale and then click it off. It is just possible that on your recent service the throttle bodies were 'correctly' adjusted and now you need the boost offered by the fast idle. My '05 1150GSA-SE behaves just like yours if I don't follow the above procedure, and it always has.

One alternative may be an 'accelerator module' but they are considered by some to be snake oil; another might be a trip up the A3 to Steptoe of this parish who will diagnose your troubles using chicken giblets :nenau

Well thanks everyone. Apologies it is was a 'bone' question :blast

Glad it's not just me - I'll put this one down to newbie ownership!

+1. Mine will start without the fast idle but won't tick over or pull from low revs without it until 1-2 bars are up on the oil temp gauge.

So if mine is alright without the fast idle do I have a problem?

Just because you're paranoid ...

So if mine is alright without the fast idle do I have a problem?

... it doesn't mean they're not out to get you :D

It's probably not a 'problem' if it's not causing to a problem; the fast idle on my 1100 was purely ornamental, my 1150 is something different

Don't worry, B4ndit, mine doesn't do it either. Maybe because it is a superior Graphitan shade :nenau

Hi all, thanks for the advice on this (non) problem. Yep, it was defo user error as it worked fine now :blast

The best thing is that it's saved me a shed load of cash trying to fix problem that didn't exist.

out of interest, whats the difference between an 1100 fast idle and a 1150?

Also, what is the idle speed on your bike.

If it doesn't need the fast idle from cold I'd have thought that it was A) running too rich at idle or B) idle speed is too high.

I think that the spec. for the idle speed for an 1150 is supposed to be 1100-1150RPM. I think that is too fast to my ear and have adjusted mine down to 1,000RPM when warm. It definitely needs the fast idle when cold.

Hi Packer, not sure if the question is aimed at me but if so, my bike idles at approx 1000-1050 when warm.

I ...

In the above question I meant whats the difference between an 1100 fast idle control (Mechanisiam) and a 1150? not the idle speed :D

... have no idea; just that the lever on my 1100 made no appreciable difference, unlike the 1150; The guru StepE-Toe did once mention 'cable tension' and 'bastard' during a discussion on the subject but he could have been talking about something else :nenau
