Tail light question

I've just bought a 1995 sportster which the previous owner has customised a little. It has a sparto style rear tail light which is not a brake light. I wish to have a dual tail light (i.e. brake and running light, sorry if thanks sucking eggs). I have no skill at all when it comes to electrical matters. Is this an easy fix? Will I have to replace the light unit and if so can anyone recommend a retailer? Also, bit of a silly questions but is it illegal not to have a brake light? it's just passed an MOT!

Daft question, but have you checked the bulb?. Single or double filament? Has the brake filament blown???

I haven't but only because the guy who owned it before me said it's was a single circuit! I trust that means it can only be a running light??
