Next year we are planning on a 2 week trip around Spain. We have done the pyrenees & Picos a few times as well as the dash down to Algeciras,. really .
We would like to see a bit more of the contry this time around. We have a list of places we would like to visit including:

Salamanca
Seville
Ronda
Granada
Cuenca

Has anyone done a similar trip and if so did you find any interesting roads to link up the places above.

Use a Michelin map and ride as many good looking back roads as possible to make your route up, I did something similar years ago and had a brilliant ride out of it:thumb

That will end up being the plan I guess. I was just fishing for any recommendations.

Thanks for looking.

I would spend a lot of time in the Asturian and Galician mountains. Outstanding roads. Outstanding views.

Thumbs up for Cuenca. Amazing buildings hanging off the side of cliffs. Nice ancient hotel up the valley (Hotel Cueva Del Fraile), pool etc but no air con. Worth a visit tho :beerjug:

Baz, that is the way to do it. I've done all of my trips using google maps to find the twistiest roads and then waypointed them on the sat nav. Never failed to find me some spectacular, uninhabited roads.

The road from seville to marbella through the ronda valley is great, but it gets busy.

My only word of warning is that Spain is a big place and taking the little twisty roads means long days in the saddle, but well worth it imho:thumb

I've been using the ViaMichelin.com website to view their maps full screen and pick out the scenic twisty roads. Saves buying them :thumb2

I just hope the problems with Brittany Ferries are sorted out, otherwise we'll be having a change of destination :(

I do this southern Spain UK run quite a few times a year and here is my favorite route plus a lovely tootle round the Andalusian countryside (I tacked on the Cuenca bit though).

Santander - Burgos via the N623.

Burgos to Salamanca - mostly Autovia but worth it to get some extra time in Salamanca - magic place. There is a shorter route to Salamanca but not so nice.

Salamanca to Cordoba - this is probably the best road north/south I have found in Spain. Leave on the A50 then turn onto the N501, and then the N502 south. Stay on the N502 until you are almost into Cordoba.

A431 to Carmona (lovely small castle town) then decide how youi would like to enter Seville. That's will lead you to the best road into the town for your hotel etc.

Head south on the Auto Via again to Ls Cabezas - not too far, then onto the A393 to Jerez de la Frontera (where the MotoGP is in April). Eventually to Arcos de la Frontera.

Take the A372 to El Bosque, then on to Grazelema.

Take the A2502 to Ubrique and continue on through Cortes de la Frontera then join the A369 toward Gaucin. Have a cup at Gaucin and visit the station and gawp at the views on the way there.

You need to turn round and head back up the same road but all the way to Ronda. Sounds boring (retracing) but the road is much better to ride in this direction any way. If you like fast twisties this will burn you out LOL.

From Ronda there is a super fast road (the local Plod use it for training Hi Speed pursuit as its fast but some serious corners), then if you want Auto Via to Granada (the coastal route is nice but loads of stop start and traffic - takes ages - I'd sooner spend my time exploring the Sierras around Granada).

From there Jaen, Ubeda and then your choice of roads (non great as far as I know) to Cuenca.

This sounds like a blast of a ride. Wish I was joining you.

Sorry the map png was a bit too big to upload. Sure you will find the route though.

Cheers

Ian

Thanks chaps

will take a look at the roads & suggestions.

I'm sure that Brittany Ferries will get there act together by next year. Still baulking at the price though it save a boring ride through france.

The area to the North-East of Teruel is called Maestrazgo/El Maestrat. The most sparsely populated region of Spain, apparently. It is mountainous, pretty much unspoilt, and has some lovely roads.

Mora de Rubeilos up to Morella (travelling roughly from SW to NE) taking in towns like Cantavieja, Villarluengo, Villaroya). An unforgettable ride. My favourite area of Spain (although I can't pretend to have done it all by a long chalk).

Some lovely minor roads in Catalunya too.

roads down past ronda, aldogonales, el bosce nice little villa blanca (white villages) in the campo (in the sticks) funny bars small resturants and twisty roads...

Top tip ...

... Include Segovia in your itinerary; the search function will tell you why :thumb

If your going to Granada visit Alhambra its a must, they do morning or afternoon tickts so don't roll up mid morning :thumb2

Did the exact route you are looking at, apart from cuenca. Salamanca is a great place, not very big but plenty to look at. Seville is magic too and preffered the real alcazar to the Alhambra in Granada. Make sure you see Christopher Columbus tomb in Seville cathedral.

Ronda is nice and the road to Malaga is great.

One place you must go to is the sierra nevada mountains south of Granada and stop near capileira, Bubion or pampeneira. The roade are just amazing and rank amongst the best I have been to in Europe. It's real Andalusia. Get a Michelin map and explore. It's remote and breathtaking.

PM me and will gibe you the list of hotels we stopped at in all the towns. All were really cheap, had secure parking for the bike and either in town or easy to walk in or get the bus. I had no complaints with any of them.

Thanks for the help, Ferry is booked for next Sept all I have to do now is fill the 14 days in between. Though I am also busy sorting out a weeks trip to the Dolomites in June- (Managed to leave Mrs B behind for this one).

The Ferries diect to Spain will sell out quite quickly so if you are planning a trip, best to think about dates and make a booking. If you have to cancel its only £25.

Ian,

We're currently in Hellin, heading towards Grenada, more specifically, the Sierra Nevada. (see The Ramblings of Roberto, in the Ride Reports selection... although he's too busy re-financing the wine industry of SE Spain to get up to date with his reports :101 ). After that, it's the road from Marbella to Ronda, but the 'super-fast road' in-between sounds enticing... where exactly is it?
The weather's shite.. any reccommendations for wine, food, accommodation etc?
