I thought i'd throw this out to all the seasoned traveller's out there ...

I've got 4-5 days free around the middle of May and a group of us have decided to head out to Germany and take in the Dams which were targeted during the famous Dambusters raid .... :ronno

I'm interested if anyone can recommend any good accommodation in the Rhur Valley region of Germany ... We are planning on visiting the Mohne Dam, the Sorpe Dam and the Eder Dam (which I personally thought was a cheese) ...

Looking for somewhere with a bit of character which we will use as a base, rather than staying at the standard Ibis or Das Premier Inn type of hotel ....

I have tried searching on here but nothing is jumping out at me ...

Any other advice, good routes, places not to miss etc would be much appreciated ....

There's a place near soest, Haus Stallmeister run by Frank, great accommodation, breakfast and he tucks your bike away in his barn.

I know a few good routes round there as I used to be based not to far away and do the run down that way every year on the way to the annual Harz pilgrimage.

Ps, we are passing through 26th 27th May this year if you are about then.

Herman's Denkmal is worth a looksie while you are there to in Detmold.

Soest is a lovely little walled city and only a few miles north of the Mohne dam.

There are hotels alongside the Sorpesee as I recall. It almost looks like a small seaside resort.

Both are very close together. I used to work in the Ruhr valley and the Sauerland (where the dams are) was very popular with bikers, although the roads can be very badly frost damaged.

Bochum is very lively

In June 2004 I went with Bike Ecosse (Bob Crawley) to Bodefeld in Germany when the Schutzenfest (Shooting Festival) was on. The Mohne and Sorpe dams are easily accessible from there and the Eder dam is further east but ok for a days ride. The Schutzenfest is well worth visiting.

We stayed at the Landhotel Albers in Bodefeld which is well recommended.
