Had to add it as an extra when I bought mine back in 2002.
Definitely an option...

They were an option.
I have just checked the 2003 Adventure brochure and they are there along with the engine-bars, additional lights, luggage etc.

I seem to remember in 2001/2 although it was an option, most of the uk ones came with them already fitted .Not sure about the earlier years.
I think it was more of a hassle to ask for one without them fitted at the factory.
