Currently in Slovenia & over weekend travelled from Lindau across Austria to Grossglockner.
The roads were completely choked with traffic & all motorways with variable limits were 100 kph maximum. Austria appeared to be one long traffic queue.
We assume it was owing to the checks being imposed on the borders towards the east.
Either avoid or allow extra time whilst this situation exists.

Or it could just be that last weekend marked the end of the school holidays and also coincided with a lot of road works. I have just checked webcams and the A10 that runs near here and up to Salzburg is clear. Yesterday we came back from a few days in the UK and th A10 northbound was stationary for over 50kms! Southbound was also stopped near Salzburg but we were able to go around it. Nothing to do with refugees though, there had been a major accident in awful conditions. As is usual here they shut the road until all the debris etc is cleared. We had people arrive yesterday afternoon using the A10 who said it was clear by then. Others arrived today and had no problems with traffic. Here is a useful link, http://www.oeamtc.at/portal/verkehrsservice+2500++1095812 not all the webcams work but enough to see for yourselves. There is an extensive list of road closures for roadworks but most say "in der Nacht" so should not be a problem for most of you.

No doubt there will be some queues at the German border at times but having just looked at the webcam nearest the border there is not much evidence of a problem right now. We saw long queues couple of weeks ago coming from Serbia into Croatia but it was the trucks that were held up, we on the bike had only the usual queue for a passport check. I expect the same will apply to other borders.

Traffic, never saw anything like it in my life.

Left Malta at 0800 Sat 28th of Aug, en-route for Augsburg, Around the slip road at Gmund and onto the A10.

First glance to the left showed a solid stationary traffic queue heading south. Very little light traffic heading North. This continued to
about 20 K's short of Salzburg. As said, almost unbelievable, There were sections heading south where people had set up tables and chairs and BBQ's in the roadway. Folks were standing around in groups drinking coffee and smoking and generally chilling. Some were catching a few rays on recliners. Unbelievable unless you saw it.

Mega jams like this have happened before, usually it's because they have closed the Karawanken tunnel which is the main route into Slovenia and on to Croatia. I don't know about the 28th August because we were on holiday in Romania then. We have always advised guests to avoid the A10 on weekends in July and August because of the risk of hold ups. 5 hour delays are not unheard of hence the picnic tables etc. If the tunnel is open and there are no accidents it is fine but just one collision can leave the road closed for hours. As there are traffic lights before the numerous tunnels to prevent queueing in them filtering is not an option you can only filter to the next red light and then you are as stuck as the car drivers.

The alternative routes have hardly any traffic by UK standards even on holiday weekends.

Shame that they decided to close the 99 in both directions during the proceeding week and on that weekend.

Same everywhere really they only have a short time for repairs.
