Brother in law bought a very clean low miles (18,000) 10 plate V Strom a couple of months ago from a dealer , after less than 1000 very easy miles with no issues the bike started to have a proper oil use problem.

It used 1 litre in 120 miles and was smoking like a 2 stroke , producing vast amounts of back pressure from the breathers yet there were no rattles etc and the motor still ran smoothly

Dealer took the bike back in and after a compression check showing 185 psi on the front and 120 psi on the rear cylinder the top end has been stripped down.

Showed 2 cracked rings on the rear cylinder which is apparently unheard of in the history of the 650 motor.

Expected the dealer to at least bore both barrels and fit new pistons and rings BUT the dealer (a main dealer but not Suzuki) insists that it only needs the rear barrel rebored and a replacement 0.5mm piston and rings and Suzuki say the difference in mass of two different size pistons will be fine and not effect the bike in any way.

Now I know that it is not good engineering practice to run a motor with miss matched pistons so it will be interesting to see what happens when it comes back

Get that in writing so your brother in law is covered when this poor attitude towards best practice comes back and bites him in the arse.

Very strange, these things are bullet proof............. unless run low on oil/coolant.

Nice to hear the dealer has acknowledged the problem & is attempting a fix but, personally, I would move the bike on. Trade it back to the dealer & get something else. Your BiL doesn't want someone elses problem down the line.
