My first post is a bit of a whinge I'm afraid. . . . .

I'm getting a bit miffed at the faults recurring on my GS, so thought worth giving you all a list to open up for suggestions on how get some er, "after sales service"

100 miles - gearbox imploded. Very kindly replaced by BMW. No explanations.
Bike still flings itself out of 2nd gear, usually when accellerating round a left hand corner.

Battery - temp. gets frosty, make sure you have the AA on speeddial (maybe this might get fixed as part of the battery recall)

Electrics - where to start.
1. Go off road or over a speed bump, all electrics fail. (happened twice) No ABS, lights, etc etc.
2. Take keys out, bike still runs (quite useful really) Side effect however - might lose keys and not know about it for miles!
3. Gear selection indication bears no resemblance to the actual gear the bike is in - makes starting up even more difficult. The bike won't start in neutral if the elecs. think its in 3rd, 2nd, 4th, whatever.

Luggage - The vario box is basically expensive crap and prone to fly off on rough tough (like roundabounds with pot holes) Also, the locks spring out very easily so are of no use.

Tyres - My bike came with a faulty Metzeler so I had to buy a new one. The garage promised to refund me, but havnt.

Would welcome suggestions to resolve any of the above, including actually getting some level of afterservice.

Any BMW staff, feel free to contact me by email
You will not I havn't "dobbed in" the responsible BMW dealership on this site - yet!

Oh, not all bad news:
Got knee down in 1st & 2nd gear.

South London to South Cumbria under 4 hours easy
huge fun, when it works.

Hi Marcus - welcome to Tosser's ville.

Sorry about your GS probs

I too have had serious probs (not the same as yours) with my 1200GS (1800 miles and red!) - all are being resolved to my satisfaction by the nice people at BMW - and I mean BMW GB HQ - not the dealership.

If you want a name then email me at melglass@ascom.net - you can't PM me since you've not coughed up your tenner!

Cheers

Correct!

yes, 1200 GS.

took 20 minutes to get going this morning, what with the cold and the gearbox indicator...

Earliest BMW can fit me in is "middle of next month".

As Newbie...I'll happy put myself forward for tosser awards for any of the following on a 1200GS:

Pulling a stoppie at the lights and forgetting that my shortarse legs wont reach the ground at both sides (as they could on my old 850R) Cue much hilarity for rush hour pedestrians.

Getting knocked off by white van man . . . whilst under police "escort" on a bikesafe day. Last laugh ME as 6 plod take the blokes van to bits

Side fairing panel flying off on the M6 after I hadn't quite put it back on after an off-road "detour" went a bit awry....

Overtaking a minicab on a corner whilst giving the nescafe handshake sign to the occupiers (pulled out in front of me) only to find blue flashing lights and four heavily armed and unamused rozzers inside - oops.

Listening to Chemical Brothers in crash helmet - can't keep to speet limits.

Wheelies off flat top speed bumps = "road furniture" becomes personal amusement park!

Whinge

No wonder the bikes sha##ed after riding like that :nono
You must have stole it,thats what i say! :tosser

Hi Marcus,

I`ll say hello before you become a statistic.

What a lemon.

Answer: part ex it for an 1150 or, even better, an 1100.

(1150 owner) :thumb

I'm impressed with all your responses.
Conclusions:
Stay alive to keep things going
Avoid speedbump wheelies to preserve electric
Use rucksack and bungees instead of the vari-no-box system
No more stoppies at the lights (no more point-and-laugh-games for commuters)
Don't flog the kick-starting Vespa as it's more reliable in cold weather (no heated grips though)

Get onto BMW GB as to why their direct subsidiary (not a franchise, a-ha!) have such poor aftersales.

Will update . . . . .

Just for balance

and so the "1200's are crap brigade" dont get too feel too smug :)

3 months old
No battery probs
No brake probs
Vario panniers havent leaked or fallen off
Tyres as supplied still full of air
Gearbox works
Gear indicator 100% accurate
Key switches bike off and on

Then again:

I dont pull stoppies
I dont pull wheelies
I dont get my knee down (boots and pegs yes, knee no)
When I take bits off, I put them back properly
I dont overtake on bends whilst giving hand gestures

But I'm probably a boring annally retentive :tosser who wants his bike to last a while

Of course all of the above was typed one handed whilst "touching wood" ;)

Reading that back it may not have been the bext way of putting it

little update, copied from Dealers thread

On the way home last night the ABS and speedo packed up.

Bike started first time this morning despite frost & faults - astonishing

I think the best way to get some service is to go via sales. My experience with sales is all good, service nearly all bad.

BMW Park Lane now have my GS and I have one of theirs, so presumably as the sales bods are a bike short they will get onto the repair people sharpish.

Lets see if the aftersales people can break all their bad habits and actually fix stuff without messing about their punters.

Wait and see . . . .

PS
I think with a bit of luck the service people are getting an overdue word or two from head office.

I was in Park Lane a few months back thinking of buying a sporty one.
Decided not to at the time due to recurring faults with the GS. I thought that if BMW can show some after sales care, I will get one.

They didn't give a damn down in aftersales so I bought an RSV-R instead.

I haven't had to call the AA yet with 300 miles on the clock. THe GS was on call out no.3!

Park Lane sales now know they lost a new bike sale due to the crappiness of Battersea aftersales ops. bwah-hah-hah

If by aftersales you mean the lazy half baked morons at BMW HQ your gonna be lucky they have your money they dont care theres too many people paid too much money for a bike who are too embarressed to complain and admit that its a lemon and that there bike is shit.I don't have a problem with my dealer SSB but i have a whole heap with BMW.
