Route South

If you don't want to take the autoroute or autobahn then go via Verdun and Meuse Valley (?) to Epinal. Then over the hill past Gerardmer to Colmar Watch out for the specialists in full leathers on supermotards or the rich guys in 4 wheel drive Porsches. There are occasional skidmarks into the trees as well!. Then break for the Black Forest and Austria.

The Oetz Valley has loads of hotels for bikers and it is at the beginning of the route that takes you over the Timmelljoch (ride it at least twice!), but most places are very bike friendly. Sorry I can't give any links to hotels in the area that I've stayed at but get searching on the Internet. Go to the Eagles Nest and also ride the Gross Glockner. You are spoilt for choice!

Have fun :thumb

But don't blindly follow your mate with his GPS who has got lost in them thar hills late on a Sunday with the fuel guage dropping at an alarming rate... actually a nice ride through those hills if you aren't worried that you might have a long walk looking for fuel. ;)

Hi RHN.

Where is the Eagles nest?
It's in Austria isn't it?
I don't see it marked on maps.
Sorry for small hijack, it's all yours again!

It's actually in Germany, but just a wee bit south of Saltzburg.

The town at the base of the coach ride up is Berchtesgaden.

Best tip is go the Hull/Zeebrugge route and avoid Newcastle/Ijmuiden, the ships are better as are the facilities and prices are cheaper

I'm thinking if you are going to leave from Hull, then why not leave from Harwich? There are fast ferries (4 hours) as well as slow ferries, and the cost return in March for a bike on the fast boats is 86 GBP verses over 200 GBP for a required berth (I picked standard 2 birth??)

The Harwich Ferry docks at Hook of Holland, just down the river from Rotterdam. It's the way I use when I drive over to the UK from here.

no it is in germany but very near border with austria, bergasgarten is name on map it is well worth a visit quite near salsburg

could do worse than go from imuiden to mosel valley or the rhine gorge near koblenz about 250 miles on motorway we found this is a good stop off for the night [cochem mosel or boppard rhine] loads of castles etc, just follow either valley down about 45 miles good biking roads and scenery, then on motorway to aprox heidelburg then drop into black forest , we do about 2 hours a roads then bsack on motorway to get some miles in to austria, innsbruck is a good ride out in one or two days but anywhere round here gives you good access to all passea, plus 1 hour from italy and two hours dolomites bikers heaven, we don,t pre book anything and just see where we landhave agood time, try web site www.alpine roads.com good site
