Could anyone be so kind as to confirm the surface of this particular road in Alpes?..

The road is a left turn off the S21 heading west from Borgo S Dalmazzo, it links up with the D97 at Isolo 2000. Its a thin white line on the Michelin 527 regional map with no identification..

Is it tarmac,gravel or what?

This might help...

A quick google turned up the following:A German K-bike site.

In fact, there seems to be a number of hits, and it appears to be a common route to take for road bikes riding the passes. The hits included the Germans on the K1200 site, a Finnish motorcycle club, and I also found that it was part of some kind of an Italian ride-out, with various pictures here:

So I would gamble on it being tarmac, but not necessarily of the highest quality.

It looks like it's the Col de Lombarde, and if it is it's all tarmac. The Italian side being fairly new this year. It's a tight little road on the Italian side as well, definitely no big buses, but I'd not like to meet too many cars on it either. French side, especially down from Isola 2000 is like a motorway in comparison. I'll check later if my guess is right when I'm at a PC that has mapsource on it.

If it is here's a picture of the top:

Near Sant'Anna di Vinadio. You need to go the left (going from Italy) whereas straight on is Santa'Anna. Not obvious but it's almost a hairpin turn!
