disc probs

when braking with front, it all seems a bit squeeky. I thought perhaps salt etc had got in. On further investigation found this . . . . . . The rivets holding the disc seem to be worn. Surely, thats not wots meant by a "floating disc" ???

If I hold the front brake on, the calliper clamps the disc ok, but there is a certain amount of play forwards and backwards in the wheel. Ie, I can actually rotate the wheel with the brake on, albeit perhaps only a millimeter or 2, but enough to be spotted easily.
The rivets seem to allow sideways movement in the disc, which i can understand, but surely not in a rotational direction ?????

Thanks all, in advance

Martin

Sounds like your bobbins are shot - sadly unlike disks on K's they are not serviceable items. Unless you know a specialist - there's one down here in London (All Bike Engineering) elsewhere don't know, only worth doing if your carrier and disk has plenty of life in it. A new 'semi-floating' disk will set you back the best part of £140 from BMW, a pattern cast iron 'full floating' item from Motorworks, Sherlocks or dare I say Motobins would be the way to go if I was in your position again (about £120) with your faulty item going the other way. If it is that its a straight MOT fail and not the best thing to be riding with :(

Just dropped in my 1150 yesteray with what sounds like the same problem. It started squeeking on the front brake a few days after picking 'er up. The brakes themselves seem to work OK, but the squeeking is so bad I don't use the front brakes in town, prefering instead to rely on the rear and save some peoples' ears. Will let you know what the mechanic finds later in the day.

Nah 'Steve', yours just sounds like a build-up of brake dust on the pads, they'll pull the pads out brush the pads and use an airline to clear residue out of the caliper, then apply some coppaslip to the back of the pads and whack 'em in again. 10 minute job. Had the same with many of my previous bikes including everyone's favourite the pan enormous.

Judge (Pretending I have a single clue about 1150GS's :D)

(Ususal disclaimers apply to any answers based on Oilheads, never owned one, never ridden one and you shouldn't be listening to a word I say on them!! ;))

judge sounds right to me (from another person who knows FA about 1150s, but a fair ammount about brakes).

All done under warranty, so not really my problem... my brakes squeek... I want them to stop... here Mr. Mechanic... when can I collect?

Ya see, now where's the fun in that? No need to source difficult parts, no need to find a spanner who knows his way around Airheads, no need to scrimp around looking for a compatriot who has a similar bike and just might have been there before with your problem, nah that ain't real motorcycle ownership....

Martin, you've got off the hook there ususally when one of 'us' posts in the wrong forum one of the Oilhead police come along rip into you fr owning an antique and remind you to post in the one single forum for us, namely Airheads. Fair play to ya for gettting away with it MikeO must be busy today and of Pinto6X is away suffering a Tuscan Easter holiday :D
