Hi all, some travel advice needed please...looking to ride down to southern Portugal at the begining of July.

Has anyone done this?
Any good estimations on how long it would take (a leisurely pace with passenger)?
Any top-tips for a route?

All suggestions appreciated...
All the best

Northern France can be boring on motorways, and it's VERY big.

A ferry to Le Harve cut's off a big chunk of France and while it may be more expensive than 'le tube' it saves you petrol costs/toll fees & time.

Mind you, a ferry to Santander would do even more of the above but might negate the purpose of the ride.

Once in Portugal, don't eat fried pigs ear, it is disgusting.

The roads in the Algarve claim more lives/kilometre than any other in Europe; don't drive tired.

Just my musings, have a blast :thumb

Thanks for that

... makes for some more thought. didn't know those statistics about Portugal.

To be honest, not entirely convinced that Portugal is my destination of choice, maybe I'll reconsider Spain (do the Santander crossing) and head to the Med.

With that in mind, anyone out there with tips/routes or warnings about riding down to or through Spain?

All the best

I've been to Portugal a couple of years ago and I rated it (although I prefer the food in Spain) but I'll have to agree with their driving - they've all got God as their co-pilot.

If you do go the Santander route you will be delivered to the doorstep of the Picos-de-Europa (do a search on Picos to find lots of info from others on here).

From there, I've taken a route down through Salamanca a couple of times and then headed for the Extramadura Region. It's not visited much but is a bit like parts of north Africa.

From there push on south to Seville (brilliant city) and possibly Cordoba in Andalusia. Granada and the Alhambra is worth seeing if you have the time.

I'd ignore the Med coast (too commercialised and too many tourists) and if you are returning via Santander, turn north visit Toledo, Avilla and Segovia. this route will take you through the Toledos and Gredos mountain ranges, then you can head back to Santander via Burgos (home town of Rodrigo de Bivar otherwise known as El Cid).

Camping is good in Spain. Lot's of decent private sites everywhere and easy to find.

If not camping go for Hostels. Cheaper than hotels but just as good. The difference is that Hostels don't have a restaurant, where like most travellers you wouldn't eat anyway, preferring to find somewhere in town to eat. Look for a blue letter 'H' on a building.

The Spanish are motorbike enthusiasts. Drivers will usually do all they can to let you get on and pass them. The biggest problems I've had riding in Spain were from French drivers intent on getting to the Algarve or wherever!

Just returned from my big euro tour which included riding down to Sines just above the Algarve the driving was scary. I liked portugal and the people but I rode for two days and hardly saw any other bikers apart from 125 riders you soon get used to the suicidal overtaking and being tailgated, last year I did 3 days trail riding in the algarve and I felt far safer off roading Mike P s right the Extramudura is very special and if your getting the santander ferry dont miss the Picos there stunning.

Thanks fellas.

Top advice there.

Still trying to work out the best destination for a ride and a holiday with the 'doris' on the back.

Lots to think about there. If there's anyone else out there with suggestions I'd be very grateful to hear them.

Thanks again.

I've driven all along the northern spainish coast, and down the portugese coast to the algarve. Well worth doing. But it was in 1980, so it's not worth me detailing anything. Just do it and enjoy . . :thumb

Did they have roads pre-EEC? ;)

Top tip - get a good night's sleep on the Portsmouth - St Malo route, arriving in time for a prompt start the next morning.

Route south from there is fairly clear (Rennes, Nantes, Surgeres, Bordeaux) using N137, D114, N137, N10. I detoured below that into the Pyrenees for the fun (stopping in an excellent, bike friendly small country Auberge).

I was going to / from Lisbon. Took 2.5 days in each direction. Longest days were in excess of 500 miles, but without using any toll roads (they are generally fast, but I find them boring). I'd say a comfortable mileage would be 350-400, but even that may be high unless your pillion is road hardened.

Spanish roads better than Portuguese roads...

Northern Spain is very underestimated area. Not only the Picos but Cantabria and the Basque country has some excellent roads..

For somewhere to stay near Bilbao/Santander try my mate's place Casazalama.

It's 2 days down to his place from Calais. Unfortunately it's difficult to avoid the motorways all the time if you're leaving from Calais but once past Rouen you can start to get on the smaller roads but don't expect to do high mileages. Chisurz is about right with 350 miles a day off motorways.

Cheers

very very potholed ones.

I stayed couple days at a place in northern spain called Ribadeo, at a small hotel opposite the road that led to the beach - we were the only people staying ( late september), i went out with the owner on his boat and caught our dinner.

I expect it's a sprawling commercial hell now. And no fish left in the sea

No pot-holes where I went. If the picture has attached, then this was somewhere between Salamanca and Valadolid.
