View Full Version : BMW Dealer locations as .gdb files

I have recently purchased a Garmin 2820 unit rather than a BMW NavIII, but of course one misses out on the Dealer database that is part of the BMW units software.
I have therefore constructed my own POI database for European dealers.
Working with some existing POI lists, I have then logged onto each countries BMW website and verified the name and location of every dealer. I did this for all countries except France and Spain, though I suspect they're quite good to start with (and I'd already spent at least 20 hours of solid work on the computer). I had to make quite a few name and/or location changes, especially in Germany, Italy and the Western part of Switzerland.
I am happy with the results.
These are attached as .gdb files as .csv files are not allowed.

Are you releasing it or is it for your own personal use? Sounds like a very handy bit of software :clap

Releasing it, once its finished that is ;-)

Takes my ancient laptop ages to compile them & I need to make sure they work on Mapsource etc so it'll be while yet.

The idea is to sell the mapset for US $50 & share the profits with http://www.magpas.net - keeps my tank topped up & helps their fundraising.

There are some early versions of the maps on http://www.smellybiker.com you can play with, they cover most of the UK.

The test maps are not routable yet but it'll give you an idea, they're untested so if they break anything you get to keep the peices.

Cheers,

Bob

I'm going to Clarks in Rednal this week, so I opened your file and notice that there are two BMW dealers shown for Clarkes. There's the Garmin one and there's your waypoint. The Garmin one looks correct to me, I usually come up Ashill Road from the A38 and turn Right. Your waypoint would direct me away from Clarks. For your info... cheers

Would you consider adding independent BM* specialists ie Steptoe and RGM - or maybe as a separate POI database?

The UK dealer map that I started from was not 100% accurate but thanks for everyone's helpful feedback.
I have removed Cooper Reading, moved Clarks, added Battersea and the new Cooper Tunbridge Wells location set to open in 2007.

Kritou, I might start an independent list but it rather excludes certain BMW models, if the independent does not have the latest diagnostic gear - but I do take the point. I am worried that I will exclude someones favourite!

Ladies and Gents,

Due to popular demand, well one chap suggested it, I have collected some BMW independent servicing names together and put them into a Garmin file. Some are mobile, so don't easily lend themselves to waypoints.

If I have the location incorrect, then please amend and "private mail" me the correct location for the waypoint. Likewise if I have omitted any names, then please mail me the name, address & telephone number.

I'll give it 3 or 4 weeks and then I'll publish a new version. Over to you..... and thanks in advance for helping.

This is another experiment.
I have started to create a database of dealers in .gpx format for use by the Garmin POI loader.
This time the .gpx files have been edited to fill out the phone number field to make them dialable from a Zumo or 2820.
It seems to work on my 2820 and would like to know whether it works on the Zumo as well.

I did the same John and I know how time consuming it is to put lists like that together. Thanks should be given by all for your time and consideration.

Not that there are that many changes, but it is also very time consuming keeping track of those.

You'd think BMW AG would crawl out of the dark ages and put a current downloadable GPS list alongside each country dealer listing.

I'll load those into my GPS in the future and see how coincide with my existing BMW dealer waypoints. BTW, I use a BMW Roundel for an icon...looks better than a car on a lift.

I have attached a new dealer list for France in .GDB format. If you convert these to . GPX and upload these as POI's into a Zumo, you will be able to dial the numbers from the phone book.
It includes the new dealer at Calais/Coquelles. I have used the dealer list from BMW France and tried to verify that those that have disappeared from the last list have indeed done so. The "dropped" dealer that does not mention the F800GS/F650GS has been omitted, for example. And the so-called current BMW dealer who has recently moved premises & is only advertising Hondas on his website has also been omitted.
I have done my best!

As a bonus I have also attached a new list of dealers in Eastern Europe (CZ,HU,PL, HU and Slovakia). Thank you CN2008 - wading thru Hungarian websites is an unusual sort of masochistic pleasure!

Thanks for this although two weeks too late. I went to the dealer at Brive-la-Gaillarde and found a citroen dealer instead. :mad:The one at Limoges was also half a kilometre away from the original GPS location. It is located above a Mazda dealer. Very helpful though fixed a front split brake hose immediately. Please remember though that Moto dealers in France do not open at all on Sundays or Mondays.

This deserves comment - do not trust "my" waypoints as gospel - and France is especially troublesome.
The BMW website shows the dealer in Avenue de President Kennedy. The Mazda webiste shows the dealer is in Avenue du Président John Kennedy, Viamichelin shows an Avenue du Président John F Kennedy and also an Avenue du Président John Fitzgerald Kennedy. If one googles Mazda Limoges one gets 404 Route de Toulouse but the pop-up map beneath the "quote bubble" shows Rue de Toulouse.
The French attitude is like that of my teenage son, "Whatever!".
You'll have to ask for the Mazda dealer!

So as far as the dealer in Mazda/BMW Limoges is concerned, I have found two different "location map-pins" and, sitting here in my study, I can't confirm which of the two is correct. If anyone can clarify, I'm sure the board would be grateful!

I down-loaded a few of these BMW dealerships onto my GPS for a recent trip to Italy.

I had to pay a visit to a dealer on my way to Venice & the premises I was directed to was a car dealership.

May be worth double checking any waypoint you use before you save it to your GPS.

I came to this forum through a post on /www.bmbikes.org.uk[\URL].

I know it's a lot of work making POI files from just addresses.

I did it myself early this year (2008), not for whole europe, but for
Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, Danmark, Sweden

I've found the following BMW Motorrad sites to take the addresses from:

BMW Motorrad Belgie : [URL]http://www.bmw-motorrad.be/be/index.html
BMW Motorrad Danmark: http://www.bmw-motorrad.dk/dk/da/index.html
BMW Motorrad Deutschland : http://www.bmw-motorrad.de/de/de/index.html
BMW Motorrad Espańa : http://www.bmw-motorrad.es/es/es/index.html
BMW Motorrad Finland : http://www.bmw-motorrad.fi/fi/fi/index.html
BMW Motorrad France : http://www.bmw-motorrad.com.fr/fr/fr/index.html
BMW Motorrad Italia : http://www.bmw-motorrad.it/it/it/index.html
BMW Motorrad Luxemburg : http://www.bmw-motorrad.lu/lu/de/index.html
BMW Motorrad Nederland : http://www.bmw-motorrad.nl/nl/nl/index.html
BMW Motorrad Norge : http://www.bmw-motorrad.no/no/no/index.html
BMW Motorrad Österreich : http://www.bmw-motorrad.at/at/de/index.html
BMW Motorrad Schweiz : http://www.bmw-motorrad.ch/ch/de/index.html
BMW Motorrad Sverige : http://www.bmw-motorrad.se/se/sv/index.html
BMW Motorrad Tsjechie : http://www.motobmw.autecgroup.cz/ShowPage.aspx?tabId=-1
BMW Motorrad UK : http://www.bmw-motorrad.co.uk/uk/en/index.html

I've checked beemerboy9's version of Holland, but it seems to be not up to date.
Some dealers are not in it, some dealers have moved, some dealers have disappeared.
My version contains also address, telephone number and web-address (when available).

You can find the files here (http://www.qsl.net/pa3fbo/Garmin/BMW_Motorrad_2008_Be_De_Dk_Nl_Se.zip)

Yes. I was reading down the list to share how I did it as I had the same question. Its not difficult. I downloaded the free software GPSBabel (there's a Mac version too) and it allows you to convert files to a huge number of formats including gpx. then with the Oregon's equivalent (presumably) of the Garmin POI Loader, you select the folder you put the new gpx files in and it loads them to your device.

I loaded the original database from the start of this thread so I don't know how up to date they are now. I will need to check

I know there are sites like best biking roads and the like but why not have our own
