Wayfinder Newsletter December 2006

Firstly some Christmas presents for Wayfinder users;

We've built in a mini-application to show Wayfinder lanes using Google Maps, which has been well recieved by those who've tried it out. It's a simple coloured overlay of lanes and sectors, with some of the detail held in WF displayed too; links are provided to read the full detail in the usual Wayfinder way. An electronic marked-up map! Nothing to download, nothing to set up; just click and view. You can get to this mapping either from a single Lane Details page, or can go via the View Lanes menu to see all lanes in an area around a grid ref.

Wayfinder used to have a member's forum for Q & A's, it was withdrawn because it wasn't very secure. Temporarily, discussions were housed within the GLASS forums. Now re-launched independantly at http://forum.wayfinderproject.co.uk/ the Wayfinder forum now takes a more standard style and is meant for ALL Wayfinder users, whatever organisation they may belong to, if any. You'll need to register for the forum and choose a password, unfortunately it is not yet integrated with Wayfinder logins. You might want to use the same username to help with remembering! There will be a delay while an adminstrator approves your membership, please allow a day or two.

Those who prefer to download Wayfinder data and view on their own mapping system, will probably already know about the Exporter that allows use with 'Memory Map' software. The Exporter has been enhanced, and now supports 'Anquet' software with AEF format files as well.

For the New Year, we have ambitious plans for a complete rebuild of the system. This will improve the 'logic' of the way the data is held, and allow access to new technologies. Google Maps provides a taster of the kind of thing we'd like to develop then. Brand new system, brand new name needed ... any suggestions? Please air them in the new forum!
