Hi all,
A friend has asked me to have alook at
a Ducati 749 for him now I know the basic's
chain, oil, brakes, crash damage and the like.
A mate had a 916 a few years ago in London
and if i remember right the belts had to be changed on
it at giving mileage, is this right and is the 749 the
same. Any advice would be great.
Thanks
joe

Service record is everything on these. If it hasn't got ALL the stamps and ON TIME regardless of mileage then walk away

The belts are supposed to be changed every 2 years but most carefull owners will have it done every year. They should lift the cams every year to check for pitting as well. Have a look in his garage to see if he has very expensive synthetic oil, if not then worry

If it's not a pampered toy then I wouldn't bother. They are ten a penny these days and dealers are knocking them out cheap with a guarantee just to get shot of second hand ones. My local dealer has a warehouse full of them at the back of the glossy dealership so that the punters for the brand new stuff aren't scared off by the re-sale values :D

ARGHHH DUCKS

I agree with the resident mechanical advisor Herr Muttley :thumb
Servicing record is a must,
Belts EVERY year is de rigeur don't even think of going 2 years, could be very expensive, ask the Italian bike shop in Crediton.
2nd hand ones should be loads cheaper  as there being hoarded away to disguise
the glut of them !!!
Not one person I know thats had one, would buy another if it was out of Warranty !!!

A mate of mine has one & he suffers for his art! :D Sore wrists, knees, arse & neck will be regular occurences for him & avoidance of bumpy roads will be a requirement :D

a different perspective*: can't see a problem with no service record except for resale. no one buys them without history 'cos that's what the comics say, hence no history, must go REALLY cheap.

as long as he's changed the oil it wouldn't bother me. an enthusiast owner doing his own maintainence seems ideal to me.

i believe the cambelt change is at 6000 but i might be wrong, depends on which belts are fitted. when they go, they do a lot of damage. any doubt, change at once.

let's face it, IME the bike will have been built badly at the factory then either further ruined or more likely ignored at the ducati service agent, so history means jack shit unless it was serviced by a proper ducati specialist.

has to be CHEAP though. no one wants ducatis with no history (except me, obviously and i don't really want one at all, way too troublesome).

*kinda assumes your mate does his own spannering.
