Damaged me ring, yet another EWS thread

Have you had an EWS error on your 1200?

But the fact remains, if you take your GS or GSA on some adventure-touring somewhere and the effing ring breaks, you are royally stuck.

Not if you carry a spare - there is a "get you home" work around. There are some threads around somewhere.

There was a note that Touratech's Herbert Diess, when he took the F800GS to Africa, carried a spare antenna, spare fuel pump and tyre repair kit as his spares. Which shows what breaks as standard but also that is get aroundable. :-)

Rings

All the many thousands of 1150's seem to do very well without all this electronic crap, which would seem the correct term. £12000 for a bike and this happens it would seem quite often, no my 1150 is going to stay till it falls to bits. (probably not long to go!).

Been struggling to think how this helps.................but I can't.

From a conversation with the dealer this morning it appears that BMW UK do not have any ring antennas in stock and a spare will have to come from Germany.

It appears that a new part number has appeared on the system indicating the ring is different from the one fitted on the bike. :nenau

If you are going to be off the road for any time give me a bell, i have a spare sat a sittin in my top box......(Just in-case you understand) sent to me last week from Williams Manchester...:thumb

The new Ring Antenna Part numbers are being discussed over on the ADV forums. A bit of a long post but maybe useful.

Hopefully there is some light at the end of the tunnel?

I still believe, as other posts have suggested, that this model (GS) should have the ability to Disable these "Security Functions" for off road use.

I dont know how someone living or traveling in some of the more sparsely populated parts of the world ( Dundalk, Ireland :D) are supposed to rely on BMW assist to pick them up.

The immobilizer is not essential to the running of the bike, surely a software tweak, could give the owners the option to change/switch of some things, like, Immobiliser, mileage from Miles to Kilometers etc, for some of the RTW types. The bike is being Marketed and sold as a Adventure bike after all.

Can you provide a link Paul - cant seem to locate it?

this pic pretty well covers it:

Neat... So its just unplug the old one and plonk the new one side by side and plug it in ...

I'll need a spare then - better get my order in before the rush starts again :augie

Just had a play with the cover on my 07 GSA, and the screws that hold the cover in are the same torx as the Garmin 26xx / BM Nav 2 / 3 etc security screw :)

Got it ;-)

..although it appears to be shielded by a black plastic shroud which makes it hard to get at :augie

...just need to order a spare and ill be prepared for the worst :aidan
