Hello all, well I'm sure I'm in the right place for a bit of advice. I am wanting to get myself a replacement screen for my R1200GS (08). I have been looking about and there are several to choose from which is great but also a problem, which one to go for? I am not will to spend the £400 + on the BMW adventure screen and have come across what looks like a good option from ZTechnik called the VStream Windshield R1200GS/M 06-07 R1200GS / GSA 08 Up
ZT-Z2415, it is also expensive at £207! What would you recommend? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

I got the adventure screen off this site for £158. Very reasonable indeed. If you are not in a rush then haunt the "For Sale" section or ebay. I am very pleased with how well the Adv works, especially now I've added winglets.

The adventure screen and the bits to fit it should "only" cost about £300 - £320. That's for winglets and all. If you have an 08 bike, knobs at the side are already the same as an adventure so you save a little money there also

Where do people get this notion that the ADV screen and bits is £400?!?!

I managed to get one off a dealer for £250, delivered. But it was missing a couple of parts which cost another £15ish, which I could have not bothered with but wanted a proper fit.

Oh: your location is London, I take it you've contacted Battersea for a price, probably the most expensive place going unless you're a favoured friend of theirs.

Are BMW parts not a standard cost countrywide, then?

I'll likely never buy a bike from them again (trading an '05 bike of theirs up to a new '08 bike, they wanted £3,500 more for the switch than the next dealer I called...), but I had assumed that bits were the same as everywhere else.

rowen,
I have just tested the Puig touring screen and then a MRA Vario, the MRA was better at all speeds for me... The Puig was much better than the OE screen...
I also bought a NN tinted high screen that is supposed to be very good, but I didn't bother trying it as the MRA worked...
Buy a NN one, then you can always sell it on here......

No.. not standard at all. Though it does help if you go into a dealer. But even phoning around can yield results.

As an example of prices BMW OEM Fog Lamp Kit varied from £320ish to over £400 before fitting.

Thanks to a post on here, I got lucky and won a set off eBay from Ocean for under the advertised eBay price (£299) via a Best Offer.

As for the GSA screen, I was being quoted up to £320 quid, again just for the parts.

But it this way, the GSA Screen, winglets and fog kit cost me less than going into Battersea and asking them to supply and fit the fog lamp kit alone.

You're in the SE, so you have a large number of dealers to price with. Also being in the NE, makes Scotland or Allan Jeffries a viable option. Coopers in Boldon are lazy (IME) with regard to pricing parts as they've little competition.

Lastly, any dealer can post stuff for a few quid... which some dealers seem to forget.

Like anything, shop around.

Getting a good screen on the GS it's quite problematic, and it can be ultimately a lot more expensive not buying the best screen from the beginning.
I learned this lesson the hard way : the Aeroflow is my 4th windscreen on my 2008 GSA (I am 6,1) and is the only one that really gets the job done properly . For me the stock screen (with/ whithout TT extender) , the Wunderlich Progressystem (with/without TT extender) , the Ceebaileys, were just money badly spent.
Plus, improved aerodynamics = improved fuel consumption = the screen (and or/ other similar mods) pays for itself in no time, if you really ride your bike.

Wow, didn't reckon I would get such a fast response! Its great to be able to have somewhere where one can get the facts from the people in the know. Thanks to everyone who has posted a response. Well if anyone out there is selling a GSA screen please let me know. Happy to relieve you of it.

Smaller is definately the way to go. I fitted the Slipscreen from Machine Art supplied by NN. It fits to the stock mounts which allows up and down adjustment, and completely elliminates buffetting, and adjusts to enough to allow silly speeds with very little wind pressure on my chest. I'm 6'1" tall. It looks good too IMO and well worth the £69.00 asking price. The stock screen has joined the increasing number of bits to be stored away...

This is trial and error and personal preference. I tried a Laminar Lip and it didn't work for me, but I am taller than most and have the seat on high as well. Managed to pick up a used Cee Baileys off this site for £50 and it is great. Screens like Cee Baileys come in a multitude of sizes, which is a bit off putting when ordering new, as the wrong size can be an expensive mistake.

The best (and frequntly repeated) advice is to go out and try bikes with different screens and see which suits you the best.

My Laminar Lip is available to try out and see if it works for the cost of the postage.

I've just (today!) fitted the new 1200GS screen from BMW. It's about 3" higher, 3" wider than the stock screen and the sides are a lot flatter than the heavily bevelled ones on the stock screen.

I picked one up in New York this week, and apart from being a right pain to cart back on the flight, it went on fine.

I've only had a quick half hour blast this afternoon to try it and the air flow does seem to be a LOT smoother with it fitted. I just need to have a play with the position as it's nearly full up at the moment.

The guys with the NN High and wide screens - Where abouts do you have the screen set in terms of elevation?

Here's a piccy of the new screen overlaid over the old one so you can see the difference...Sorry for the photo but a clear screen is not easy to photograph!

MRA Vario screen on e bay now much better than standard screen in looks and performance (copy and paste link)

I use the SECDEM screen after having read quite some opinions about what was on the market in 2006 when I purchased mine. I'm 1,88m high and have the seat in the upper position.
A picture that shows it in comparison with BMW standard screen can be found here:

I am very satisfied with it. It does not change the look of the bike too much and gives me much less noise. It gets fitted with the standard screen parts and I have it in the highest position which still allows me to look above the edge.

It gives very good weather protection which is sometimes quite nice to have here where I live, however in hot climate areas it might be a bad choice as one gets not much cooling air when sitting behind it in low speed.

Tried also with home made tobinators which did not give any further improvement.

10X better performance and I am 6 foot 2. The looks are excellent with the black bike and dark tinted screen. I am happy a much more relaxing ride.

BTW got it at the lowest setting which seems to work, now I am over illness got a trip to Italy and Switzerland in 3 weeks :thumb so will test it out to its fullness.
