After removing the hideous BBQ rack from the rear of my Road King, I'm trying to get hold of a number plate support bracket which bolts on in its palce, part number 47440-92. The problem is, this is a discontinued part number :blast

I have a feeling that the later 97 onwards Road Kings have the same part albeit a different number.

So..... has anyone got one knocking about in their garage that they want to sell or, has anyone got a 97 on one that I could borrow to see if it does indeed fit?

This is the bit I'm after:-

Please Mr Moderator, I know this isn't the FS&W section but it is more likely to get the desired response here :thumb2

Can't help I'm afraid, but you're starting to suffer the apalling lack of support for 'older bikes' from the Motor Co.

It seems that they will produce parts for as short a time as possible (legally speaking).

The upshot of this is, if you ride an Evo, you'll need to get fairly canny when it comes to replacing bits on your bike.

My 1989 'Glide is even more 'in the wilderness'...

Edit this may just be the licence plate holder not the rail...

That whole back end set up looks exactly the same as mine (2005 Twin Cam Road King). To be honest, I would be very surprised if it didn't fit. You would be welcome to try mine for size if you are ever darn sarf or, you could always go into a dealers armed with a tape measure and measure some on the bikes in the showroom.

Personally I didn't like the way the number plate stuck up and interferes with luggage being strapped to the back. I found a number plate bracket that fixed under the rear light and bought a different light lens.

Have a look here: http://www.jpcycles.com/harley-parts
for a bewildering array of shite to festoon your HD with. You will almost certainly find something to fit.

I'm darn south too........I've a 96 glide...with all the shite removed from the back end and a "lay down" number plate...we could get together and see what fits??

Paul -

Its only really the plates we need - i'm not too worried about the tubing round the back - the no. plate can then be bolted to the mudguard somehow.( maybe with a laydown bracket )

If you go that route with Vern - then let me know and i'll get a couple too.

How hard can it be ??

also looking for a rack over the top in place of the pillion seat - similar to this set up, but less tacky

Something like this then! Look up "Motherwell Rack" if that's the kinda thing you're after. Let me know if you need more info. No one off fabrication needed for number plate brackets.

I think it's the u piece that holds the pannier rails in place that's required here

Thanks for all the offers and advice here :bow

Phil, as far as functionally goes you're probably right it is only the brackets/plates that are needed.

Have a look at the photo below, if you aren't bothered about putting the rack back on, once off you could just take a hack saw to it... that way you would end up with the two brackets/plates to bolt back on:-

That's sort of right Rich, but it's only the brackets that support the pannier rails. As far as I can see the only purpose of the U piece is to provide somewhere for the number plate to fit.

I may have sorted a solution.... I found this the other day, although they say they ship to the UK I have had no response from them asking how much :blast I didn't realise at the time but, one of the guys here has an office also in the US just 15 miles from the Retrocycle store..... he's due to sped a few days there shortly so has offered to pick one up and bring it back to blighty :bounce1:bounce1

The eBay link you sent me was for a 2002 model. The part was changed in 97, so allegedly the part for 97> Road Kings is different and won't fit out 95 models.... but looking at it it looks pretty damn close.... That is/was the whole point of this thread, trying to work out if the part is the same even though it has a different number.

If you're mounting your No plate below the light they would be fine :thumb2

Looks like this guy has them fitted:-

Where did you get the number plate bracket to go under the light, and the light? Did you find a light that had a downward facing number plate light?

The number plate bracket (stainless) was from J&P Cycles and bolts through behind the indicator bar.

I then bought a 'Kuryakyn' rear light lens with no clear panel at the top or bottom. What I then did with regard the number plate light was to wire in some LEDs tucked under the indicator bar. Problem with this was it seemed to cause problems with the wiring (Poxy, modern over complicated wiring). So I took this off.

Instead I took the low tech route. I drilled holes in the bottom of the rear light lens and stuck some clear perspex on the inside. You can't see the holes and it gives a 'soft romantic' glow to the number plate :D

Thanks for that, I bought my 2001 Road King Classic in California when I was living there and shipped it back when I moved back here. The whole number plate thing is a problem as I have to bodge the huge yellow blob on for MOT and then I take it off and put on a california sized number plate afterwards (so it fits under the touring rack). It's never very satisfatory and I have been trying to find some way of putting it below the light for years.
