Hi all,

Just come back from Southern Ireland where the women are lovely :thumb , the beer is superb  and the roads are fantastic (but a little bumpy) :bounce1

And its this bumpy road thing that worried me. Spent a day without the panniers on (didn't need the weight) and the next day, came to put them on, and they wouldnt lock down. :nono

After investigation, the lugs had managed to screw themselves into the pannier racks.

Anybody come across this and how to deal with it? Lock tite? Back to dealers? :nenau

Cheers

Nate

Sorry mate, not quite sure what you mean, a picture would be helpful.

Do you mean the mushroom headed bolts on the pannier brackets by any chance ??

Yeah, there the chaps. The BMW panniers lock on to them with the little red lever thing.

The locking nut had come undone and they had screwed themselves right down. So that when I came along with my panniers, they were at the wrong height and the panniers wouldn't clamp onto them.

I don't have my manual handy, but there is a correct height for them to be set to. Any lower and you can't get the red lever down and any higher and there is enough play that the panniers may pop off of the mounts.

Mine often used to do the opposite, i.e. almost unscrew themselves and fall out

A little blob of Loctite was the answer (that was after doing them up tighter than I was comfortable with and them still coming loose).

Just tried to look it up in the various bits of paperwork I've got and am buggered if i can find the correct figure, am sure it was about 16mm though.........

Any way, being the analy retentive sort of bloke I am I've just measured the gap between top of lock nut and bottom of the base of the bolt and mine are set at 16.5mm ( and work fine thanks ;) )

Expensive bolts

Some kind person has posted a diagram including the correct distances. Mine wobbled loose - £15 to replace.

This is taken from the BM workshop manual.

Measure distance (x) between the top edge of the locating pin and the top edge of the washer.

Setting, locating pin for case

25 - 29 mm

Result: Measured value is out of tolerance.

Slacken locknut (2) and adjust locating pin (1) to specified distance (x).

Tighten the locknut.

Note
A clearly perceptible initial resistance when the case engages indicates that the setting of the locating pin is correct. The locating pin requires adjustment if play becomes perceptible after prolonged use.

I would echo the advice to Loctite the Pannier mushroom bolts in. Last week I was touring in the Dordogne and one of the pannier bolts undid itself. Although I tightened the locking nuts before I left for France, one still dropped out. I didn't discover this until I came to put the panniers back on for my return trip to the UK. Ended up bungee strapping a pannier on, this came off on the journey as was severley damaged and then I actually lost the pannier!!! :spitfire :spitfire

So Loctite those bolts or like me you could lose your pannier(s) altogether.
BMW Assist were absolutely useless, couldn't locate me a BMW dealer on a 700 mile return trip who would have a pannier bolt, but managed to send me on my route back to a BMW dealer who had ceased trading. :spitfire :spitfire

so the mushroom should be set between 25-29 mm or do i measure x

I found that once you do the locking nut up tight (but not too tight!) they never come loose - no need for thread locking goo.
