It never arrived, so Devitts arranged for NIG to issue another card, this time sent by special delivery. It arrived this morning, but the dates of cover are 13 to 25 April. WTF!!

It seems to me the problem lies mainly with NIG. The Devitts staff seem polite and helpful as they can be but are thwarted at every turn by NIG. It's like swimming through treacle.

NIG seem to be a shambles, BMW are trying the best to be a go between but failing miserably
The problem has to start with Devitt, they are the broker for the scheme, getting paid by us (their customers) and / or by NIG and / or by BuMW to do a simple job, properly and honestly.

Over the years I have had endless run-ins with Devitt's Romford office, with clear evidence that they have made up stories (lied is a better word) to cover up their lack of action or inefficiencies. I have had to visit them, twice, dumping files on the receptionist's counter and demanding to see someone in charge, along with the person who had plainly been untruthful, claiming to have sent documents out.

The 'green cards' fiasco has been going on for more than two years. Add to this, sending out (or not sending out) Motor cover notes (as required by law) to the wrong people (God knows whose I got...), for the wrong motorcycle (despite repeated letters, putting the bike's registration in capitals), failing to renew the insurance on one of my bikes, despite having received the premium (confirmed by Devitt and my credit card company)....I can add more. The only time I ever got a speedy resolution (after nine months of temporary cover notes - or no cover notes at all) was by contacting the predecessors of the FSA.

Why do I still use Devitt? The simple answer is that they are cheapest, by a considerable margin, for Honda / BuMW motorcycles for me, living in central London. The saving is never less than £200 a year, or the price of one of my little jaunts to France.

As I work in insurance (or more exactly international reinsurance, for multi-nationals) I am, from next renewal, going to try to deal directly with NIG's head office at Old Street, just around the corner. I am not sure they will do it but it has to be worth a go.

I guess I'm starting to get nervous of taking £9ks worth on just 3rd party cover.........
I call Devitt, who are to all intents and purposes, the same as BuMW Mottorad Insurance, on a variety of telephone numbers.

The ‘green card’ only confirms that your UK cover has been extended to provide Third Party insurance into certain specific countries, nothing more.

A ‘green card’ does not confirm any ‘Comprehensive’ or ‘Fire and Theft’ cover at all.

    Insurance in Morocco?

Does anyone know how long it takes to get a green card at the border, my insurance with CIA doesn't do Morocco and the only advice they can give me is to get it at the border.

Can anyone give me advice on any pitfalls or how long it's going to take? I'm planning on being there on the 24th/26th May depending on how long I take to travel through Spain and touring Morocco for two weeks.

Yep! even threatened to cancel but to no avail, I got a quote from Carole Nash for 'DOUBLE' the premium I'm paying now....so that's a no go!

I'll stick with CIA but I'm hoping all goes well with the border crossing, reading some of the threads on here, there's problems getting a green card at the crossing and that's why I was asking for advice.

    Post Green cards for Morocco

    Hi,

I was in Algerciras, in the south of spain recently.

Algeciras is the port town which you will probably go to catch your ferry across to Tangier.

Along the road directly opposite the port is a number of agents for ferry tickets and other travel requirements.

I happened to notice that they displayed signs outside advertising green cards for Morocco.

I know this would be a last minute, last resort option for you, but maybe it will help someone.

    Good luck,

    Paul

I Don't believe it BMW insurance 'Devitts' underwritten by NIG have now refused to give me a green card for my trip to Morocco in June, if you read back through this Thread you will find the following:

I recieved the call from BMW today and have been told that they WILL give me a green card to travel to Morocco and will not cost me a penny, the only condition they have applied is that I will need to contact them in May and give them my schedule of stops and how long I will be in Morocco, I travel on the 11th June 2008 and will only be in the country for 14 days on a trip NOT organised by BMW. So this is testiment that when they say NO, absolutly NOT, can't be done, is never done and I qoute 'According to our system nobody in the UK has this cover and will not be able to help you sir , sorry' this is all a bluff and if you keep going and show others who have already cover they MUST give in.
So here we are in May and i have just been on the phone for 55 mins getting more and more frustrated, I have left them promising to call me on Tuesday morning after once again calling NIG to see if they can get a green card as NIG are now saying 100% 'NO' to any green card that is not part of a Mottorad tour.

I am in need of help! can ANYONE who has recieved a green card from BMW, Devvits and ultimatly NIG in the past four weeks please please drop me a line and let me have your insurance reference number, Devitts say they can use this information to fight NIG. The requirements are a none BMW tour of UK national traveling to Morocco. Please help!

    NIG Policy change for Morocco

NIG the underwriters of Devitts insurance who are infact BMW insurance have changed their POLICY for cover in Morocco, as of the 1st March 2008 they will NOT provide a green card for any non Motorad organised trip to Morocco. The reason they are giving is that repatriation of motorcycles is too difficult from Morocco and that they are not able to cover the insurance.

I have battled long and hard for months to gain a green card via Devitts and have finally been promised that one will arrive on my door mat early next week. Devitts have been great and very understanding, the issue all down the line has been NIG.

I am posting this to let anyone else know that unless you have already been told that your card is sorted and on it's way that you will not be successfull in changing NIG's mind in the future as they have formally made the policy change (although) i have not seen any announcement on the FSA website to that effect, so not sure it's legaly binding

    Aon Bike Ireland Cover

    Hi All,

I am insured with Aon Bike care in Ireland, think AXA is the underwriter, have a fully comp policy and asked for bail bonds for Spain and a green card for Morocco, received them free of charge for three weeks travel, only thing that concerns me is that the "Green Card" is only a cover letter stating the details of cover and not an actual green card as I have seen from some other insurers, phoned the company and they said this is a legal document and is fine. Any comments?

Does the covering letter state, specifically, that Morocco is included?

You will still find it easier with a 'green card' as the natives recognise it, a point made on the MIB's website. Whilst the MIB is a UK organisation (I have no idea whether Ireland has something similar) its advice is fairly good.

See if you can persuade Aon (the world's second largest insurance broker) to pull their finger out and let you have one.

PS I guess, but do check, that your Irish motor insurance will automatically cover Spain (as a fellow EU country) - Morocco though is not in the EU. I, as a Brit, never both with a 'green card' for civilised or western Europe.....even for Ireland

    Enjoy your hol's.

    Morocco Green Card

The cover letter does state Morocco and the travel dates pretty clearly (for the customs guys), but the insurance company are positive I do not require a "green card" and will not issue one, other than the cover letter. Still think the piece of green paper is the way to go!! Will have to try my luck I think at customs. Filled in the temporary import on line though, great link. policy does include Spain but having bail bonds was advised in case of a tip. These are issued as a seperate piece of paper in English and Spanish.

    Good luck.

There is no link between customs import / export regulations and insurance but handy to have a green bit of paper, providing the bloke isn't colour blind.

What's this temporary import malarkey? You don't need it into Spain (unless you intend to hang around the orange groves and bull fights for several months) - or it's a non-EU registered bike. So I guess it's the bike's temporary import into Morocco?

Do separate Spanish bail bonds for EU members still exist? I thought they vanished, it being understood that, following EU harmonisation rules, they were automatically included within the EU member's 'home' insurance?

When we entered Morocco via Ceuta last month the insurance 'office' was closed. We knew about this after following this thread.

I acted dumb (it wasn't hard ) and asked the guy at the border where do I buy my insurance, he pulled me in close to him and said "excuse me sir, we don't talk about insurance here", I said "what about the police", he said "they won't talk about it either".... so I didn't pursue it any further

Went through the border at Ceuta on 1st May. Apart from the huge queue (it was a holiday in Morocco as well as here ) the bank and insurance office was closed. Was told to go to Finideq to get the insurance and to find a bank for Dirhams.

    JFYI......

Both the insurance and bank at Cueta/Sebta are shut for the long term.

There is however a Moroccan insurance agent in Alegiras, just outside the gates (and over the road) from the multi storeycar park that you queue under to get the ferry.

It doesn't open early, so you can't get the first two or three ferries, but it does mean you can use Cueta without risking riding/driving to Fnideq without insurance.

(There are multiple police points along the coast at the moment with the Port Du Tanger development getting on a bit)

Office is approximately as marked on map below......I was on foot so wasn't able to WP it.

    STOP PRESS

There is now an insurance and money changing place back at Cueta.

It's in the car park area that's used by the Taxis and kids selling tissues/individual fags, just oputside the Border compound.

It's a portacabin in two sections one doing insurance and the other one being a Bureaux De Change.
