I thought this may be a good thread to start so we dont all start planning to carry EVERYTHING individually and also to give some idea of the expertise within the group.

I have a decent ammount of knowledge of medical issues in particular trauma ie cuts and breaks. I am also in a position to source a half decent med pack with pills, potions, lotions and plasters with a view to covering small issues to dealing with a major off.

The kit would have to be split down into 2 parts and i would have to ask one of you chaps with all them lovely boxes on a big bike to carry a bandage/field dressing bag (approx 20cm x 15 cm x 8 cm). it can be squashed together and would fit into a smaller space than this.

I have also been lucky enough to live in the desert for about a year with nothing but a sleeping bag and a knife for survival so if we end up living out for a while i am confident i can read sand conditions and deal with the local wildlife.

I know Rich has a fair bit to deal with planning the route etc but i was wondering if there are any compenant mechanics, foreign linguists or off roading gurus amongst us?

Dont be shy, tell us what you are good at:D

Good topic to raise, but this is of course assuming that everyone sticks together, and does the same route, so as spares, kit etc can be split between the riders.

I know that Rich initially said that he didn't want to ride in much more than groups of 2/3 etc..

The other small hiccup I can see developing, is different routes, and length of time at hotspots.. some may want to blast through, while others may want to stay a while.

How I can see this panning out, is groups of two/three heading out in various directions..

But who knows?

As for what I can bring..
Fair amount of mechanical competance, Good first aid BG, Good culinary skills, Competant outdoors skill set and the all essential roll of toilet paper :)

what can you bring

Good area to raise MDW...

As i see it I'll bring my own medical kit , i have made up a kit for most eventualities, minor and major. Fist aid i'm ok with personal stuff up to reasonable level as far as other things, mechanics ,not bad , can change a tyre et etc, i have a small repair kit i'm bringing myself , little air compressor, tyre plugger and tools should cover it anything else major that cannot be fixed roadside it's hello recovery via bikershome or other local means.

Ref experience , been to Morocco and travelled inependently all over the world to an extent, outdoor skills ok.

Ref Off Road riding , Used to do alot of enduro's but still mange to crash and fall off , i'm not looking at major off roading with my heavy GSA and road biased tyres lol , if i want to play in the dunes or do some of the harder pistes i may hire a bike for a few days ,it's cheap and i aint going to sink in the sand or crash and burn a 1/4 ton of bike lol

Size of group wise , i think it all depends what people wanna do , but my exp is a large group is a handfull, better to split into smaller groups, and then maybe rendevous at a point agreed later in the day if it's possible or just go your own way, at some point you may meet up even if its on the ferry ...

2 -3 i reckon is a good number but then again what do i know , and it looks like i'll be doing the return to Tanger route on my own anyway if i make it at all...

Only other thing is Navigation that i can think of , i've got the maps, i have the Garmin topo routable and the tracks Tim Cullis has made, these can be shared , not everyone needs GPS but i would think it is a good idea for at least one of whatever number of the smaller groups does as a back up to a good map.

So basically i'm ok with First aid , basic mechanics , off road stuff , speak very little French , happy to help out anyone and i may need some help too . i.e probably;)

Oh and spelling i'm terrible at without a spell checker :D , fist aid lol

Thats a good start, i see what you mean Si, about the splitting up. I am sure it will happen so maybe it is better for people to pack independantly.

It seems like most of us are fairly adventurous well travelled people paul so hopefully most would be able to look after themselves outdoors.

I will still plan on taking a pretty good FA kit though. I just thought the trade off would be maybe somebody who was not medically minded but maybe more mechanically could plan on taking something not normally taken like a Compressor or Torque wrench in place of a full FA kit.

I am pretty sure everyone will pack basic stuff, toolkit, puncture kit, fa kit etc i just thought it might be a good idea for certain individuals to pack a more specialist item rather than everyone overpacking.

At this point i would like to point out i would rather spend most of my time under canvas rather than in hotels (although with local food if i can find it). i am not averse to spending a few nights in comfort with a decent shower and local food but i am hoping that would be in the more built up areas visited(with  hopefully). Therefore i will plan on taking at least a basic kit to stay out (SB, Mat, canvas, Cooker etc).

I'm with Chad on that one.. I too like the idea of kipping under a basha/tent, campfire, stove, ging gang goolie.. etc etc etc ;)

What I guess may need to happen, is to loosely sort out who intends doubling up as riding partners, and sort out splitting gear between them. Any specialist items then, that no-one has room for, can then be offered here, for any takers... Ie: would siut someone who doesn't have a hard & fast agenda, and who is quite happy to potter around between groups / routes etc.. (if you sorta get the idea)

More than happy to take half the FA kit for chad.Would that half of the kit just happen to have alcohol in it for medicinal purposes :augie.
I will be changing my tyres early in the season, that would give us a spare set of part worn tkc80`s as back-up.
Also have, puncture repair kit, tyre levers,toolkit.....camping gear:camping and a decent cooker oh! and a folding table with four chairs:Motomartin.
I`ve done a couple of bike tours in europe, couple of off road skills courses and a little greenlaning.can do the very basic maintainence stuff ie tyre changing etc.
I`m more than happy to muck in,pull my weight and generally help as much as i can.
Have`nt got corkscrew or bottle opener :blast yet!

useal suspects

average camping, bike fixin`,cooking skillls, have the old 911 unit and basic spares for bike, plus fpc, coils, wheel bearings, levers and sifen tube. i carry basic fa kit and beleive if people want to keep in touch we all swop moby nums and if anyone has bike to bike use it! is usefull and fun. as for the carrying and dishing out of spares and kit,if you are shure of a travelling buddy ok, if not go selfsufficent(spelling,i`m drinking)that way if you get split up or fall out, well....thats how it goes, how do i know, did a terra circa in 07 and when we got to south korea we split, granted met up in L.A. but travelled north america diff routes.i tink we all need another meet as we all have different agendas on routes and times, no bad thing but to keep in touch and be there for help to each other is a good thing, i also have good portable speakers and a phone full of honest decent rock!
