From Kaysersberg, taking in the Col du Bonhomme, Col des Bagenelles, and the Col de Ste. Marie, on to a friendly hotel in Étréaupont, where the head chef, Dominique, has a Harley trike...Not my cup of Earl Grey, but he's quite excited at the prospect of meeting 15 or so burly, British, hairy-arsed bikers. Of course, the biker bit may just be optional...;)

HOTEL HERE

I'm certainly after suggestions for somewhere near Reims/Laon/Soissons etc.

I'm trying to avoid motorway-type hotels, but may have to succumb to them for a night on the way back :barf

This is the one in the Southern Black Forest, east of Freiburg (maybe too far east) but less than 1 hr from Colmar

Good food and beds, garages for bikes

Nearer Reims - Troyes in fact (again might be a bit too far south for yout plans)

Piney is the village, with a medieval market place

Hotel la Tadorne - owned by a French works KTM Dakar racer of some repute and his cooking is pretty good too

Courtyard parking for bikes, good food and a swimming pool (outdoors) - BUT make sure courtyard facing rooms are booked

Shame - looks like a good resting place, but that's a bit too far south, really. It would leave a 250+ mile journey back to Calais, which might take too long to get back for a decent train crossing.

If you want something in Reims then the chain hotels are the best deal for a largeish group as some have underground parking. Many of the older, more characterful hotels are in narrow streets without room for even a couple of bikes.

I've used the Comfort Hotel & Mercure which are alongside the canal and the Séjours et d'Affaire near the rail station. Functional, business hotels which are within a short walk of the city centre which has a wide variety of dining options.

Still debating this one for an overnight location, but it will take in the Col du Bonhomme, Col des Bagenelles, and the Col de Ste. Marie.

been watching this thread with growing envy....anyway we use the campanile on the edge of laon, its not in the town but is handy for the mway, is a good standard...and you could get into the centre of laon, medieval, lots of restaurants to choose from???

we are sort of talking about doing the dolomites as part of our tour, combined with a bit of the balkans...about the same dates, maybe see you on a pass somewhere??

I've used that Campanile before - useful meeting point for people arriving on late afternoon ferries etc. Premier class next door for those wanting a more budget experience. Food in the Campanile is a bit dull.

Personally, if using a chain hotel I'd prefer the last night of my holiday to be in the town centre of Laon or Reims so that one can amble back from a boozy dinner. Reims has several options at a similar price to the Laon Campanile, all with garage parking.

Good suugestion and I'd probably go for something like that if we're really pushed. I generally try to avoid those kind of hotels (only because they're intrinsically boring :D) but it could be the only option :nenau

:thumb2 Probably a less boring alternative.

I have another suggestion

Used to be a Campanile, quiet location with safe car park overlooking a beautiful lake

Very nice indeed, and one I'll save for later.

Sadly, it's still too far South for most to get to Calais fairly quickly the next day to avoid very late crossing times.

I'll keep it in mind in case things change.

Great find :thumb

Have you got the Colmar digs sorted ?

I was thinking more for that and maybe posted in the wrong thread:blast

Due east of Colmar a bit and in the Route de Thermes (Spa route)
