I suppose it had to happen, bike fell off its side stand and the LH rocker cover has some nasty looking scratches in it. Luckily that was the only damage. Question is: are the covers painted or anodised? It looks like paint, and quite a thick coating at that. And, does anyone have experience of powder coating or otherwise painting the rocker covers?

It's a GS1200 Rallye so the covers are a different colour to most other GSs. i guess an exact match would be impossible, leaving me the option of painting both covers.

Help appreciated, I did try a search but didn't find much though there are plenty of companies offering to powder coat bike engine casings.

Might be cheaper to buy as set of cylinder head protectors, will hide the scratches and protect the heads if it falls again :roll

Would be interested to know how it works out, quality of job/price etc.
There are apparently some issues with powder coating magnesium and some wont touch them. I recently bought a 'spare pair', both scratched, off ebay for my triple black which I was going to get powder coated black.john

Looks like this, if I have worked out how to add a photo.

Ouch!
The BMW Head protectors would cover most of the damage, but not the 3 highest marks, just checked on mine.:)

Will update the post when I get around to fixing this, though it might be a winter job. Since TPCS are in Melksham I might pay them a visit to discuss painting magnesium, and colour matching.

Nippy Normans do the machine art moto ones that cover the whole rocker cover:thumb

I looked at head protectors, the BMW ones look ok but I'm not so keen on the others, and for the money I should be able to have both rocker covers painted.

Memory must be going, but when I first posted I forgot that I had repainted the magnesium clutch cover on my KTM 950. It was badly corroded and stone chipped and I picked the closest match I could find in Halfords: 2 part metallic grey, and just used a regular grey primer. The paint did soften a little when the engine first warmed up but it looked ok and would have lasted for maybe a year before needing attention. It was good enough for the KTM, but not for the beemer.

Painted with Ford Nimbus grey from Halfords. Done about 150 miles and so far the paint is holding up just fine. I'll be fitting rocker cover guards anyway, it's not just the damage to paint, a cracked rocker cover could be most annoying and I wouldn't like to bet I won't drop it again despite fitting a side stand hoof and trying to be more careful.

Those covers are relatively cheap item to replace, 'd guess £120. It's not a lot to pay for a £10.000 bike. Either live with it and enjoy a few falls or replace when selling.

Powder coating is ok if they use a low temperature process. But get it done inside and out because any pinholes or bare edges will corrode like mad under the coating.
