Hi
My 1100 has done 106,000 + miles and I'm wondering weather to change or not.

Depending on my contract I sometimes commute on it, so currently doing between 300 - 400 miles a week - sometimes it sits in the shed for 6 months during the week. Then there's weekend riding and holidays (just come back from the Stella).

We have a few big trips planned over the next 10 years.

It needs, probably, a £1000+ spending on it to get it right (although it's very useable in it's present state).

So I thought I'd do a survey of high milage 1100s to help me choose my next step. I will be looking to do another 100,000 miles + over the next 10 years.

Many thanks :thumby:

I saw a 2005 1150GSA a few months ago with 185,000 miles on it

It was mint, he'd had 3 bevel bearings to replace and the gearbox had been re-shimmed at 106k, but apart from that just routine servicing

His aim was 500k

Thought about low milage 1100 for a while but after over 100,000 I know the full history of mine.

A mechanic said to me the other day that in a damp climate a lot of damage can be done with a bike sitting for long periods and you're better off with a high milage bike that's been well looked after - I'm a long way from an expert though :D

Hi Johnny.

I saw an 1100 with 185,000 Klm at the Stella base camp. Didn't see you after L'Iseran pass but I assume you had a good trip. :bounce1

235k on mine. Have replaced the drive shaft as snapped the front UJ. Had the chance of a low mileage bevel box with shaft so fitted that.
Approx 150k on that so far and just recently can feel a small amount of play in the bevel bearing.
Rebuilt the gearbox to m97 spec.
Replaced Hall Sensor plate.
Only big thing was a dropped valve which I believe is rare but not unknown.
Did 4.5k around Romania last year no issues.
Will use it mainly as winter bike now as bought a 6k R1200rt a couple of months ago, now on 10.5k.

Hi Casper

Thanks for the reply.

Sounds like you've got a good one. Only major thing with mine was the gearbox - rebiult by Scrimmager (£500) after around 85,000 and it's been as smooth as anything since.

:beerjug:

Mine has 102k. I have had it since 67K. The gearbox and clutch went at 86K, but no other major issues.

My1100s has done 176k. I've currently reduced it to 'kit form' in the garage to clean it up and replace all the electrics. Generally speaking it's been a lot more reliable than my 1150gsa (105k)

Gs11 mileage

I'd spend some cash on it, keep it and add more mileage and memories to it. I met a fella the other day from a German bmw bike group on tour here and he said everyone he knew in the club, about 400 members had pretty much all had an 11 at some point and regretted selling it when they did......
Plus there's hank on adv rider who's done more than 400 k on his without a rebuild!!!!!

high milage, have a read of this
Hi Shapeshifter

I've been following this guy for a while - a great story.

I would say that he is a bike mechanic with his own shop and he lives in a warm, dry climate so a little different from me in the UK :D

Thanks for the post, I'm loving these high milage tales.

Mileage

Hi

Measured against some of the other posts my bike is low mileage at 70.000 it is a 1997 model and is still original that is nothing major has worn out :aidan

I must admit that I have had the same thoughts as yourself, normally I would consider 50.000 miles to be around the time to change certainly I would not have run any other brand to this mileage or never have done in the past.

So I am in uncharted waters but will take inspiration from the tales of mega mileage bikes.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed my 99 R1100RT wth 82,000 mls until it failed me last week. I lost all drive, whilst I was on the way home at low speed.
It's believed the splines have failed on the gearbox end.
The repair is probably too costly at the mechanic's for the value of the bike. I've had it trailered home. I will now treat it as my project and try to repair it myself!
I am now in search of a new or newer replacement. My local independent BMW guru has put me off from buying a new R1200. He says that they are too unreliable. He said that the ABS controlers are still failing as well as other components such as switch gear etc.
Same, because I was tempted by the deals on the new adventure. The Tenere is a good bike but I don't like it. I like the look of the Stelvio NTX, but I am told spare parts are hard to get.
I think I will probably end up with an FJR, though there is a lovely 05 1150 Adventure at a local bike shop. Damned choises!!!!!!

Hi Gorila

My gearbox went at 85,000 had it rebuilt by Steve Scrimmager from Sleaford for £500 - an excellent job, very smooth now. May work out cheaper than a new bike.

Good luck either way.

Keep the high milage stories coming - the dilemma is taking my every waking moment

My 97 is up to around 115,000 now and keeps on wearing out brake pads and tyres, I am slowly performing a kind of rolling restoration.

My 97 has just passed the 25000 mark, should I be ok for a few more miles or look to get rid. Oooops, forgot it's an 1100 not a 1200, it'll be fine!
