does anyone know if it is possible to get from The Claewen Dam - to - pontrhydfendigaid, I'm looking for some straight forward trails, I've seen the Dam end of the trail when I've ridden out to the Elan Valley, and had a look on the map, there seems to be a single track road part of the way from pontrhydfendigaid, but what the middle bit like - do the two ends link up - Thanks in advance.

just to add I'm on a 1200GS, and not looking for what one might describe as "proper off road" ta

I've ridden from the damn upto the farm, then there is a sign saying somethign like no motor vehicles by the bridge, coming the other way after we turned round was a bloke 2 up on a 12GSA.

The run round the reservoir is fantastic.

The other way though, I believe there is no signage prohibiting vehicle access

you can see from below there is "vehicular access" upto the bridge from the dam, there after that is probably water authority land with no right of way.
vehicle access is also show from the other side....I wouldnt chance it personally...

Thats great - Thanks. Ill take a run up the side the Claerwen from the dam. I did a google street view the other way from pontrhydfendigaid, but it stops by a bridge.... might go up on the bike and take a peek anyway. Cheers.

This route was covered in the May/June issue of Adventure Bike Rider last year - but note the correction in the July/August edition:thumb

Sorry - I'd give you a link to the articles if I could find them online.

Thanks for that - I've just taken out the digital subscription so i can get the back issues too - ill take a look

I did it about 10 years ago 2 up on my DR650. Was quite easy.

I did it in 2009 on a GSA and it's easy, very easy. Introduced by Burtieboy and he made me go through the river (knee deep), next to the bridge, cos he said that the bridge was private property. Here's me doing it in the opposite direction:

We've gone through the farm in the past but only after stopping, walking up and asking if we can ride through. On both occasions he's thanked us for asking and just asked that we shut the gates.

Yep I spoke to him and he was really cool. He was a bit pissed off because a landrover broke his gate pushing it open...

There a trail from Claerwen Dam (across the 'private' bridge) to Rhiwnant (runs parallel to the river on its south side). it's really good on a pogo but probably a bit hard on a GS (unless well ridden).

Thanks for the info, I'll knock the door and ask. It will be my first venture off road so to speak so knowing its "easy" gives me a good start. Thanks all, I'll keep her shiny side up and post some pictures after.

Yes you can ride all the way through the farm, ford the river by the farm as the bridge is private and close all the gates unless they have been left open.
The track is an easy ride on a GS all the way.

According to the OS map, theres quite a stretch of the track that is closed to motor vehicles, the byway ends at the bridge / ford by the Claerwen farm, the online maps show that theres is a clear break between the byway / track from the Claerwen ending and meeting the road from pontrhydfendigaid, I'm in no doubt that its ridable all the way, but there is a stretch of private road (marked as "track") in the middle, i will pop to the farm and ask.

Looking at the OS key the bit between the Claerwen farm (bridge / Ford) to the road going to pontrhydfendigaid is a public right of way, but a private track closed to motor vehicles.

Oki Doki, I've found some more info online - hard to find... Welsh water seem to own the land / track, but have leased it to the Elan Valley Trust.

This bit is cut and paste word for word from a 2004 Land Rover forum... it refers to the section from the Ford / Bridge, to the actual tarmac road section, marked as "track" on the OS maps.

"I know this bit of track very well. It is indeed owned by by the Elan vally trust. It has also been known for people to get heavy fines if cought!. This whole section was bought up at a ROW meeting not so long ago. From what I gatherd it was declasified to stop a though route. The Elan vally trust have alot of wait behind the name, They were the main voice behind Monks Trod being TRO'd They are now pushing for full closure. If you are coming from the north end there isnt any signs saying it is privite untill you have cross the bridge. Also have been told the farmer will wave and be very nice but soon as you have gone he is on the phone. Personaly I would keep clear from this track as it only set to upset the Elan Trust more!"

Also another land Rover Forum thread on that stretch.

Avoid this if there has been heavy rain in the previous 7 days.....I would be very surprised if Greg didn't know how deep the water gets in the 'puddles' on this lane! 'Well ridden GS'!, no GS is doing that if heavy rain has fallen....:green gri

The "track" in question (Thanks Timpo for that map / arrow idea, hadn't thought of that.)
