crash bar compatability

Could one of the experts advise me whether a full crash/engine bar set up from a 2013 R1200GSA could be fitted to my 2007 R1200GSA, the bike had a spill and it went down on both sides. I'd rather not have to shell out for brand new ones and have located a set from a 2013 bike..................please tell me they'll fit.

I think so long as you use a complete set from the same year it will fit on OK - what you can't do is mix and match from early years and later - they all look the same but how they fitted together was slightly different :beerjug:

I just remembered - if you have an early bike and are changing to a late bike you just need to swap the two top fixing brackets - on the older bikes they are slightly longer but that's the only difference everything else will fit using the same fixing points - it's an easy job so don't worry

My bike is a 2007 and I have sourced a set of bars from a 2013, can these mounting fixings be bought as spare parts from a dealer??

Would anyone have access to part numbers?

My brothers bike has the original bars but an older cross bar. His snapped its LHS M8 end bolt -rust inside the tube. It all fits fine
Mine has mixed and matched tubes because I dropped it and bent one side. It all fitted fine.
I have not replaced the little top brackets under the beak but they are thin metal. If needed new ones could be made from 2mm aluminium sheet.
I'm not a fan of the cylinder protecting crash bars. They bend back in a crash but can't absorb any real force before they hit the cylinder heads. On the left there's is very little clearance.
With point loading there is a good chance the bars will save the rocket covers only to damage the cylinder head. Actually they don't even protect the covers which will get grazed.
My plan is to have new lower crash bars made that simply support the tank protection bars but don't stick out.
Head protectors will look after the rocker covers.

Bendy toy - just to confirm i am talking about the top and bottom crashbars maybe not the cross bit this may be the same i can't remember but as for the rest you can only mix and match from the same year - the 2006 for sure and maybe some 2007 look the same but the method of joining them up is very different - you simply can't mix and match - check against the micro fisch - i know for sure cos i have two full sets :beerjug:

It looks like if I get 2013 tank crash bars for my 2007 I will only have to get the slightly longer mounting straps for the newer shape bar.

I could almost build a new bike with the spares i have - i just keep them in case
If you buy new bars they should be on them - but if not you now know the number - so should be easy and cheap to get
I know what Bendy is talking about re the bars bending back - i will post some pics of what extra bars i put on mine to prevent this

Just a side note. My bike was low sided at fairly low speed but flipped over onto the opposite side as it was coming to a halt. I had little tank crash bar bags filled fairly tightly with rain gear..............I think these lessened the damage.

And just to save face.........it wasn't me who crashed it.

Mine is a 2008 with some crash frame parts from a 2006 (if memory serves). Everything looked the same and fitted fine. Maybe the 2010 onwards is different.

I found these and fitted them - they should protect the heads if dropped and the crash bars from being knocked backwards
Also those upper crashers were protected by those plates bolted to them :beerjug:

I came to the conclusion that rocker covers will slide along the road but crash bars dig into ruts and can flip the bike.
Mine low sided on mud at 15mph. My silly error going down a single track lane on road tyres soon after floods.
The bike went down and pirouetted around the crash bar end. The Touratech head protector also got scarred so the OEM crash bar did nothing useful.
The OEM upper bar did a great job of protecting the petrol tank.

My initial reaction was to get my friend to purchase the crashed bike from me (which he agreed to) but after going to view a couple of possible replacements, I've realised that my own is worth fixing and keeping. Bolt on bits are just that.............bolt on bits!!!
