Hi all,

First post. Go easy on me :)

Planning to do the Balkans in June, travelling north from Greece to Austria. With all the migration issues currently going on in the area is it still safe?

I have done some googling and it all looks okay but would be good to here from someone that has been recently.

Note. I have no political view on the migration and only want to know if it's safe really.

Cheers

The obvious question is, which way are you going?

If it's up through Croatia (one of the word's most popular tourist destinations) it is safer than downtown Peterborough; if you are heading to Serbia it's (possibly) less so but it's not the city of Homs. Lots of posts on this site from a bod who lives there.

Thanks for the replies.

Trip is being organised by a friend. He's done a great jobs. All ferries and hotels booked.

Sorry, not sure how to map it on google maps but here's the itinerary:
Greece - Igoumenitsa
Macedonia - Ohrid
Montenegro - Kotor
Bosnia - Mostar, Banja Luka
Croatia - Petehovac (Delnice)
Slovenia - Kranjska Gora

Thanks

PS You are going through most if not all of the popular holiday destinations.... You'll be fine.

Thanks, just what I wanted to hear. He's happy about the whole thing. I just wanted a second opinion.

Nice to find a forum with such quick and helpful answers. Appreciated!

I'll try to repay the favor by posting some good pictures of the trip.

Never ever ask about oil!

PS That is the view you might be getting if any of the advice above is not 100% accurate. Only joking........ I hope!

Last time we were down that way (October 2014) the Garmin maps were pretty poor. In some parts of Mostar for instance the roads shown bore no resemblance to reality. Further south one route would have had us travelling through a minefield and failed to show the road that had been built to avoid it. Luckily I was using OSM maps which showed the new road and were far more accurate in Mostar and elsewhere. Others with me were not so lucky!

So if you use a Garmin download the latest OSM maps and at the very least have them on an sd card for use in your device. Getting lost in a minefield is, I am told, no fun at all.

Trust me - this is home territory....

All is safe - apart from your liver and cholesterol levels....
Unless you are a vegetarian .... then it is safer to say you are only having the salad as you are gay....

If you meet any patch wearing local bikers - say hi - not the criminal world of the west - a huge two wheel party scene and you will make new friends...

All is good!

Just had a run over to Serbia for the weekend ....
Used two different border crossings on the Romania / Serbia border - which could be a primary route for migrants. All was good - no stress or issues.
Both Beograd and Novi Sad were relaxed and stress less....

Go for it - Serbia is a wonderful country - good food and amazingly friendly and beautiful (HOT) people!! You will not regret it!

Went down to Albania a few years ago, only place I felt I really needed to secure the bike was Folkstone the night before I got the train. Everything else was fine, apart from breaking down in Albania and even that worked out with a very helpful hotel manager going out of his way to arrange parts and repairs at a local garage.

Very dangerous

I see from your route you will not be visiting Serbia, wise decision as its so dangerous here it would not be safe. Its all bombs and bullets and sharp things. Its best to get local knowledge as thats normaly the most reliable. So i can sell you some protection if you dare to come ?

Went down through Bosnia the other year with Tricky and all I can say is that the roads now in Bosnia are great, real bikers roads which compares with the last time I was there in the 90's they were the last thing on peoples minds however that area is still a place of two halves that haves and the have nots.

Fantastic place to go and every where takes visa these days, but we found the best time to go was in September towards the end of the season.

Good luck and have fun.

Mark

In Bosnia look out for local mine warning signs - usually a single stick with a coke can or similar, or 2 crossed sticks. I lived there for a while and the estimate in 2002 was 50 years to clear all of the mine threat... That said, brilliant people and a great country to ride in. Banja Luka to Mostar is a hell of of long trip through all sorts of terrain, from Alpine style forests to semi desert. Good luck and stay safe
