I, for instance, have a positively unhealthy interest in underground wartime and post-war structures. Other, future readers may have other views about thread hijacking :-)

You should get over to Fauld in Staffordshire. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RAF_Fauld_explosion

My father in law (a farmer) told me he was about 5 mikes from the epicentre. He said the ground shook violently then a few minutes later debris came raining down. Thankfully for him, it was just fine stuff that far out.

Wikipedia says workers were accused of using the wrong tools when working on bomb fuses. According to locals, bombs were being stored with fuses in place.

People who know about this stuff will confirm, but I believe they were supposed to use brass tools on all fuse jobs to avoid sparks entering the bomb case. It's likely they were short of tools so used what they had to get the job done. But more likely someone simply dropped a fuse. Normally "unfortunate" for him personally, but inside a bomb store containing already fused bombs. You couldn't have made it up.

Friend who manufactured ammunition tells of an incident when, whilst transferring crates of the stuff into a store, one of his newer employees dropped a box and - as he saw it plummeting to the floor - put his hands over his ears. The rest of the team thought this hilarious as the last thing they would be worrying about if anything had gone bang was the noise :-) Nick McCamley has written many excellent books about the man-made underworld and his book about Fauld is good.
