Oil blowout and flat battery

Good point Zoltan! Believe it or not I didn't even know it was available!

I received a letter of invitation from BMW to take out the extended warranty just before the manufacturing warranty run out. It is worth inquiring why they didn't send you one?

Just had a look on the BMW warranty and the alternator is covered...As the dude said, if your local dealer is any good, a good will contribution should come your way, if that doesn't work BMW UK next port of call.

Apparently the alternator was changed in 2014 as the 2013 ones were deemed no man enough! So a known issue, hopefully won't effect too many others.

If BMW wont play and your any good with the spanners or know a good indi ebay item number 281958463223 or 272175956601 you will need to check part numbers but it could save you enough for another short trip away to make up for the loss

**Update**

The bike was returned to the UK by Carol Nash, who were really helpful. I was given a 1.0 Fiat Panda and went from Perpignan to Cherbourg picking up speeding tickets as I went LOL

Anyway, The bike was delivered to my local dealer Bahnstormers in Alton. The service manager Jody told me he would ask BMW for a goodwill gesture as the bike has FBMWSH and the Alternator should not fail at all and certainly not within 18k miles. I was happy when, a few days later he informed that BMW would pay for the parts and contribute 30% towards the labour. Reducing a £1300 bill down to £420.

I collected the bike yesterday and was ecstatic when I was told my bike had been valeted and that there was nothing to pay as BMW were covering everything!!!

I have bought a few bikes from this dealer and have recommended them to 4 mates who have also bought GS's and one RnineT from them.

Unbelievable service, although the bike ruined my holiday that I had planned for months,Bahnstormers have made that particular pill a lot less bitter swallow.

Well done BMW Motorcycles and Bahnstormers of Alton!
:beerjug:

A good result that Villanjc. I wonder if other bike manufacturers have behaved the same way when their bikes do similar things to their owners?

I'm pleased for you that BMW stumped up to repair the bike -and so they should!

Unlike a clutch, it's pretty difficult to abuse an alternator, and, as it's an engine-out job to replace, the alternator should be reliable enough to last the life of the bike.

You lost a holiday and, in my view, you've got good reason to be pissed off. But, hey, look at the joy you reaped racking up speeding fines in the rental car (slightly surprised it was fast enough!)

As for speaking English, don't be too hard on the garage. How many UK dealers speak perfect English, let alone French?

Hi Greg

The only reason I was being harsh on the garage was the fact that it took about 40 minutes of passing the phone in a three way conversation between myself ( no French) my sister ( fluent French) and the dealer (no English only French) and then to find out, two hours later that they had an English Technician out the back was staggering!

Only issue I have now is how likely the Alternator is to fail again. I love the GS and have been treated superbly by Bahnstormers but I do go on a fiar amount of trips abroad and could not stand for this to happen again as it ruins everyone's holiday not just mine!

Decisions, Decisions. I know all bikes can break down and I have had plenty bikes in the past that have in the main been solid!
