2018 KTM 790 Adventure

Likewise. I'd hope the R is better (a bit like with the 1190's & 1290's :green gri).

I love the engine (although it's a bit soulless) and reckon it'd be great in a light weight road bike............oh hang on a minute :D

I really wanted to like the bike (still have it, probably until the end of the week now.....) but yeah, a bit underwhelmed really. I keep feeling like I'm riding a 'maxi scooter' 'cos of the view of the cockpit which is very plasticy and the shape of the screen just reinforces that. It's not helped by the side view of the bike which with the low down tank and general 'lowness' overall looks, again, like a maxi scooter.

I also find the steering a bit weird, as already mentioned I find it a bit 'slow' but also the way the front turns in, almost falls in, after I've initiated the turn.......ironically like some 21/18 dirt bikes except my 21/18 1190R couldn't be more different. Maybe it's the tyres (Avons) although I've actually been quite impressed with them generally.

Oh, and while I'm having a moan, that seat! Jeeeeeez

Other than that it's a good bike ;)

Andres

Agree with every point you've mentioned. But especially that seat.

The R is so very different. But if I wanted to just road bash through Euroland and NOT go off-road, I would stick with the 1290S as it's a better road beast by some margin. That said, the 790 is more nimble, lighter to move about and equally as real world fast.

I see 44 Teeth guy has been testing the new Yamaha. Likes it a lot. But he hasn’t ridden the 790 R yet so I can’t take him seriously. The Yam is very much cheaper to buy - but at my work, when competitors tried to steal our sales they could only seem to do it by selling cheaper....cheaper meant compromises....compromises meant they struggled with sales whilst promoting the sector and helping our sales. There seems to be a sector appearing for small/manageable adventure bikes....new 850 Africa Twin sounds like it’s on the way - I bet that’ll be cheap too.

Personally, if I was a KTM boffin, I’d have suggested lowered proper R suspension for the S and they’d have had two great bikes instead of one great bike and one average one.

Just as a diary entry, out in the slippery mud and the bike did everything very well. On the deck 5 times though! And a bent wing mirror. The wide tank is turning out to be a genius idea. It hasn’t once proved too wide yet, surprisingly. It’s low CofG fab. And when you drop the bike, 5 times, the bike lands on the tank and means it’s easier to pick up. I was struggling with the slippery rocks yesterday, so I dropped the rear tyre pressure. Huge difference! So I dropped the front too and that turned out well too. I’ll post the pressures that are in it for info - too low for the road I expect but ace for rocky trails.

If the 490 twin appears in an Adventure setup it could be a popular RTW bike. There's rumours of the 790 being stretched to 890 in a couple of years which would even out KTM's travel offerings somewhat—490, 690, 890, 1090, 1290

What a great idea, though I'm so far OK with the 'S' suspension. I never liked what BMW did with the 800/650 twin GS bikes; if you wanted the lower height of the 650 there were all sorts of compromises that came along with it.

And when you drop the bike... [it] lands on the tank and means it’s easier to pick up.
That was always the advantage of the sticky-out cylinder Boxer cylinder heads.

For info the bottom right hand side of the dash area has a clip out corner piece. This can be drilled out to fit a USB socket.

Bumot Xtremadas are proving ever more useful .
In extremely heavy rain they are about 80% waterproof even without using the inner bags provided .
They can carry far more than you would ever think due to the very high sides that you roll down then secure . And the flexible sides mean you can carry non uniform shaped items.
The bottle carriers front and back are also big enough to carry large water bottles or anything else !

They also pack in quite tight so I’ve been leaving them on the bike as they don’t really get in the way if you need to filter etc

.

You say that like it’s a bad thing . More expensive doesn’t always mean better....maybe it will have less expensive fripperies ....sometimes less is more you know.

I don’t think it will be an 850 either , that’s too close to the original AT. I think they will bring out something that looks a lot like that new 125 dualsport concept bike thats all over the web only with a decent parallel 750 engine, and not the one out of the NC750. The images clearly look like its going to be a bigger engined bike than a 125.

Unlike when there’s a few bits in, and we’re filtering through Cherbourg traffic! :augie:D

No! Cheaper is good. I've just spent £13k on a £10.5k bike....I know this already!

£10.5k because you are factoring in when the discounts start ?

I'm out on this one. Would I like the suspension...yes. A noisier pipe? Not really. Clear plastics? NO!

KTM need to sort those stupid looking mirrors and make some of their own that don't break when going offroad.

Maybe it'll look better in the flesh but I doubt it. Not really very 'Rally' looking is it.

Nope...£10.5k because that's what the bike should've cost. When you at the price of the 790Duke £13k is silly. But, I'm getting my monies worth from it. It's an awesome bike.

Hiltop soon
