What to do when it rains in the Ardennes

The former casino in Chimay is now a restaurant. Biker friendly, too. Big car park.

Depending where you are staying Vianden Castle on the Luxembourg side might worth a look. I only had wander round the outside but looked pretty I impressive.

Hi D
Don't take him too seriously,, he,s ( whether or not he recognises it) becoming a right pedantic crotchety auld git . Glad you enjoyed your trip down under

Hi Simon

Happy new year. How's tricks? Yes had a good time down under thanks.
I don't take him seriously or literally :D just a bit of banter.

Well that shows how much interest I actually have in going inside casinos. Fortunately for me I’m more interested in bike racing, drinking the local beer and sitting outside cafes scoffing food because those pastimes are still catered for in the town.

You share a similar (lack of) interest in casinos as I do.

I only know that it’s is now (and I guess for many years) a restaurant as I’ve used it as a very convenient place (warm or wet) to stop for nosebag between Calais and, say Vianden, whilst hooning with bikermates of all levels.

What’s the bike racing like? Is it worth the trip for just for that?

Do you want classics or modern superbikes? They have a weekend of each though I only go to the classics so the following info may be different for the modern bikes.

Classic dates 20-22 July
Superbikes 27-29 July

For the classic bike weekend it’s practice on the Friday, more practice and qualifying on the Saturday then racing all day Sunday. Most races last about 15 minutes then there’s a short gap while they clear the debris and it’s time for the next race, the noise starts at about 9am and finishes at about 6pm with an hour off at lunchtime.

Accommodation depends on if you want to drink beer all day because if that’s your choice you need to either camp at the circuit or at the municipal site which is about a mile away. Hotels and B&B are at a premium, we used to use the same place every year and it was book before you go home on the Monday morning, the owner would email to confirm you still want the room in about February and that’s it.

The racing is always good and a few from here go every year but that’s because they’re creatures of habit and know no better :D

It’s almost inevitable that I’ll post a reminder a few weeks before the race weekend because we’ll be there in the wobbly box. If you want more info than you can find by using Google feel free to send me a pm and I’ll give it to you chapter and verse about where to drink at the circuit, where to pay when you arrive, where to buy beers on your way to the circuit, where to drink in the evening and other less interesting things like where to eat in the evening and where to buy food around the circuit.

I’d guess that it’s around 2-3 hours from Calais depending on your riding habits and if you like to stop for a croque monsieur and a beer on the way there :beerjug:

I can vouch for the fascinating aspect of the Ciney breweries... but the problem is that you need to have someone to drive you back to your place afterwards, because appreciating the visit to its actual value means you won't be allowed to ride a bike for the rest of the day :beerjug:

That insight into your life, interesting as it is, is not really the purpose of this thread. Any bod and his dog can ride around in the wet, broiling sun or on just a plain any old normal Tuesday afternoon. They don’t hand out medals.

Jeezzzz
What a prize prick:blast
