Want a more aggressive knobbly?
Just undo 4 bolts and raise up the front mudguard on these 4 sliding bolts, rear of front mudguard slides up on 2 bolts too - neat eh?

They would've sold many more had they not fucked about for what seemed like 10 years bringing it out, lost a sale from me for starters.

I’m sure Yamaha will be crying into there sake at the loss of your custom....!

I must admit that I really like the look of the new Tenere, liking the back to basics design and it sounds like a peach of an engine. When the weight of my CT becomes problematic to my ageing joints I’ll certainly seriously consider one.

Hello
Thank you for the review sounds just what I am after.
Away on holiday at the moment so will just do quick test
on a MT07 just to check dropping 25bhp is good.Put my name down before the end of July deadline:thumby:

I liked the T7 too. I found the engine awesome for the road part. The bike was easy to ride and to throw about through the few bends we did. During the off-road section (grass trail) I found it fine but surprisingly top heavy with a snatchy throttle. A light weight bike it is not.
Build quality reflects the price point which is to be expected. It felt like an excellent road engine fitted to an off-road frame (which it is). It is certainly a good compromise and I loved its simplicity.
I hoped the ABR test ride would help me decide...

Killer punch

I am having one

Yep good choice in bike and colour Johnny
I ordered a red and white as soon as the system went online
I think it will be a great bit of kit...But only time will tell
Can't wait to get my leg over it !!

Still using the good old airhead cuz i love her and it's a great bit of kit... she's only got 65hp and for me that's more than enough off road :D
So i think the t7 will be fine power wise

I enjoyed riding it Garry

Pleasantly surprised by how it went

Tenere

I also rode the bike at the show.

I am trying to get down to 1 bike-- bikes at the moment 1150 GS and Rally 250. I want the bike for an extended road/trail trip, but would like it to be able to occasionally tour with a group.

Contenders

KTM 690 (Ruled out at show)

CCM 600 (Seems a blackout on the development of this bike--they dont answer emails--if anyone has information please PM me)

T7--- waited like everyone for this one--seemed like it could be ok---if it carried its weigh well

Personal stats--- 5-9 11.5 stone---30 inch inside leg--getting old. Not too good off road, mainly a road rider--riding 47 years

Back to the bike. Below are my opinions, and I hope they are down to adjustment on this particular bike

1 Sitting on the bike, its high, both feet down-- not quite on the balls of both feet.

2 Felt like you are perched above the bike and not in it (Probably get used to this, and was toward end of test)

3 Into first- loud clonk and forward surge (Hope adjustment--this would piss me off)

4 Gear changes accompanied by clonk unless at optimum revs

5 Throttle very light and snatchy-- a warning issued by instructor---probably get used to this

6 Off road the suspension on the front very hard--not a pleasant experience (250 rally soaks up bumps when not loaded useless with gear on board--is this a price to pay or would adjustment to a compromise be possible? In short it was like driving a jack hammer

7 Clutch heavy---if using all day it would be a chore

8 On road handles very well, brakes good, enough useable power to hustle, screen not much protection

9 Definitely built down to a price, but that's fine if the above is sortable.

I have not ruled the bike out as all may be in adjustment, but would need an extended test drive. I rode bike 12--did anyone else ride this one?

Just my thoughts.

Bill

I'm surprised the KTM 790 isn't on your list as it would seem to be a contender given your requirements. Pretty much all the things you weren't happy about with the Yam are addressed on the KTM.

Or how about the rumoured 'baby' Africa Twin that's supposed to be coming out if you want something more road focused?

Ktm does look a top dog, but sadly cant afford it. Coupled with that maybe an old thought, but reliability--when on tuor the only bikes I have seen breaking down were KTMs. I had a 990, --didn't like it. Perhaps these times are past and a second hand 790 could go on the list. The CCM if itever comes@ 140kg/54HP could be great for solo travel. The quest goes on.

Thanks,
#Bill

I think pretty much all modern bikes are reliable these days, I don't think I'd discount a particular make on those grounds as I don't think an 'unreliable make' exists (well not when it comes to the major guys). I ride KTM and a lot of my mates do with no breakdowns between us........they do obviously break down though........... so not sure what that proves.

I had a 790S for a week as a courtesy bike a few weeks ago. Funnily enough I didn't like it for a number of reasons (lack of character and somewhat anodyne mostly) but then I was probably, unfairly, comparing it to my 1190R which I absolutely love. I'd still recommend a test ride though and the R is supposed to be a lot nicer (same as with the LC8 engined bikes).
It's lighter than the Yam as well as hiding it's weight so well with that underslung tank, you tend to sit in it more and the front suspension is great (although I wasn't impressed with the rear.......TBH though I didn't look to adjust it so maybe it just needed a tweak).

Price; well, if the 790 follows what KTM do with the LC8's come Oct/Nov every year you might find one becoming more affordable :nenau

Good review, only thing I disliked was the suspension offroad - as I found it harsh and under damped - hoping a twiddle would sort it out

Reckon the 700 may well become the rtw bike as the original xt500 was, loads of scope for suspension upgrades, bigger tanks etc and still cheaper than a ktm 790.
Will be test riding one as soon as they get to the dealers

I'm a KTM man through and through but have bought one of these. Only done 600 miles so far but I'm loving it. Lovely smooth responsive, torquey engine. The bike feels a lot lighter than it is, handles well both on and off road, though I have only done some easy trails.

Snatchy throttle response low down has been improved massively by adjusting the free play in the throttle. The seat isn't great, just like most KTM's.

The price differential between the T7 and the KTM790R was a huge deciding factor and the production bikes look a lot better put together than the bikes at the NEC last year.

What model KTMs do you have?

Any chance you could talk through that free play adjustment?!

Simple, just peel back the rubber cover on the throttle cable by the twist grip and adjust there, only needs a fraction but make sure not over adjusted so the bike doesn’t rev when handlebars are turned to full lock either side. You can also get at the adjuster under the left hand side of the tank but I didn’t need to do that.

I finally sat on one today.

Wow, that's TALL!

Almost certainly the tallest non-mx bike I've ever sat on, and only just do-able for me (5'11")

Well done Yamaha - I am sure the height will discourage a few potential purchasers but it will presumably create really good suspension travel.

To me the MT-07 feels a bit budget - the Tenere 700 much less so.

If I was prone to buying new bikes, I'd be signing up.
