I know this is a thread for Nav V but I can't see one for Nav IV - so here I am.
On a recent trip through France, avoiding tolls etc and therefore on minor roads, the sat nav twice lost the plot and set me off in a loop around local roads. No onward route to destination was displayed, just an endless loop around the same four or five corners around a small village. Luckily it was in a small enough area to be seen for what it was or I could have been circling for days. Like Scalextric. The only way out was knowing I was roughly going south so struck out in that direction. Within a few minutes the sat nav had regained its composure and the ultimate destination was once more on the screen. It happened again on the way back, in a different place and a very much bigger closed loop was indicated, with no onward direction to the destination. I could easily have ridden 20 miles on the wrong road had I not been roughly aware of the basic geography of the area. Once again I ignored it and went the way I thought was probably right and within a few minutes of leaving the loop, the sat nav caught up and all was well. This is no b****y good for travelling in unknown areas, so have contacted Garmin. They think the unit requires replacement - and have offerred a replacement for £154 - whiuch is very attractive - but they have no idea when that replacement might come into stock! As this is a long way from being the current model I have no idea whether they will ever get "new stock" so feel I am stuck - and like every other piece of new technology, you become dependent upon it!
The Garmin website has identified that the memory on the unit is at 75% capacity. It has a 16GB SD card, but 75% still seems quite high?
Only other issue with the thing is when calling up "Custom Routes" it can take a very long time for a particular route to display. Perhaps an indication of lack of memory? Finally I had just updated maps and software before embarking on the trip.
Can anyone offer advice as to what might be wrong and indeed if there is anybody out there who actually fixes these things?
