So if you had a G/S with an original rear shock that now is a damping free zone would you:-
A. Get the original rebuilt - assuming that possible & where?
B. Buy a new one & if so what offers best bang for buck?

I'm not obsessed with keeping it original - function trumps originality but I'm not interested in wasting cash unnecessarily.
All constructive advice will be weighed carefully - useless advice that makes me smile will be tolerated - otherwise silence is good. ;)

Not sure about the G/S but the R100GS shock isn't rebuildable. I got a wilbers from a guy in Cork who specialises in shocks and suspension, his prices trumped anything I could find online too.

Check out eBay 391189804263
They have two different g/s shock listings at a bargain £129.

The original g/s shock can be rebuilt - at a cost. I wouldn't bother tho as it has it limitations. I have had Ohlins on mine (failed catastrophically quite early on) an ancient Spax adjustable one from the 1890's (great until it too failed) and now a YSS topline (I think) one - excellent and good value, recommended.

Most shocks are rebuildable. Some suspension “specialists” do not have the equipment to do the job and just put the not rebuildable label on them. Like sealed for life. Try Firefox Racing. JJH

Motor work or Bins sell a replacement damper assy.

Fitted one to mine works fine

Thanks for responses. I took the original shock to North Dublin Motorcycles, he declared it non-rebuildable but mentioned that Firefox might attempt it. Sent an email to the Cork (Kinsale?)guy who does Wilbers but got zero response {this is sadly a regular feature of on line commercial life}. The YSS unit on EBay is tempting - I'm weighing things up but further input is welcome. Have Olins on 1200 but got that 2nd hand - new prices are steep IMHO.

I’ve had the not rebuildable response from the olens guy in Cork and others. It would be more correct to say that they can’t rebuild them. JJH

I found Vmtek in Cork who supply the Wilbers unit great to deal with a while back Gerry. They came good when I was badly stuck.
I dealt with a guy called Paul Von something or other. I did have to give them the approximate weight range of both myself, my luggage (including the missus) and they make (or get made) the unit to suit.

I think it's the same guy Fran. Mark Mensenkampff.ive PM'd you his number Gerry.

Hi Fran I have texted Paul - he is the same guy I e mailed about 3 months ago - luckily "herself" is not allowed on the G/S so I don't have to enter the minefield of her weight. :aidan

"What exactly do you mean by "my weight".?" is where is might start, but God knows where it might end....

My wife solved her weight problem by throwing out the bathroom scales.

Fortunately she won't ride pillion :thumby:.

Bob.

I have an Ohlins unit on mine. Comfy and well damped. Very happy with it. Wilbers are also excellent.

Most shocks can be rebuilt, at a price, problem is the ones that need extra work and are expensive to rebuild are usually the ones that the manufacturers thought no one would want to rebuild anyway!

At Oz prices Wilbers are probably the best bang for the buck, unless you can snag a cheap secondhand Ohlins.
Richie Moore is an agent, might be worth checking to se if he orders them to a different spec to non BMW specialists.

The usually reliable Rob F seems very pleased with his Shock factory unit , and you will never regret spending a little more to get a good shock.
IMHO it is the best bang for the buck you will get on a bike.

Revs is the UK agent for Wilbers.

I don't think Richard is an agent for Wilbers. He has his own spec shock made by Wilbers for extended swinging arms, one of which I have on my special.

I didn't say the UK distributor, which is what Revs are .
As you have confirmed he is able to order shocks to his own spec, and sell them to the general public,
He has a special one for the GS, all I suggested was a call to see if he does the same for the G/S.

It really depends on your budget. I had a YSS shock with the adjustable rebound. Looks like the original but much better at a reasonable cost. Done about 8k on it and performs just fine.
