2003 1150GS Adventure rebuild

Cheers Daveg I hear you I've spent a small fortune not to mention a shed load of hours on this so far and I am unlikely to ever sell it.

Hey Johnny boxer A
All the plastics were originally in shite quality and had faded and no amount of heat or chemicals etc were going to make them look good and given I am painting everything else it made sense to paint all the plastics as well. I initially gave the black plastics a coat of etch primer, build primer, a scratch coat and 2 light coats of black. Once the 2 coats of black are dry I keyed the surface very lightly and then give it 2 more light coats. The final stage is to lightly key again and apply two coats of 2k clear lacquer.

I was advised by my mate who is a sprayer to follow this procedure as 1k paint is made up of thinners and paint in the can and requires multiple light coats and and a good clear lacquer to seal / protect it. If I was doing it over again I would have got the black in 2k as I did for the swing arm rear drive etc as it just requires a scratch coat and two to three coats allowing for enough time for it to flash off between coats.

Cheers

Sounds fab

Slow progress

Progress has been painfully slow due to drive shaft failure on my running bike and getting it sorted. Anyway I got the tank and beak back from the sprayers, so hopefully rebuild can recommence later this week.

Cleaned and sprayed and baked rocker cover bolts and washers, saved myself a few bob (tight Cavan git:aidan).

Spark plugs cover done as well.

Engine now on it's back ready for underside to be sanded, wire brushed and coated with paint.

Not happy with alternator cover thought I could leave pit marks and dents but they are bugging the s**t out of me so cover going to get another make over

What have you done to those bolts? Have they been plated or something?

Hey Kingrat no they weren't plated . I cleaned them up on a bench grinder and sprayed with VHT paint then baked in the bar b q for an hour and a half at 220c as per the instructions on the can

Cheers

What paint are you using on the black plastics as they've come up lovely?

Is it aerosol cans?

+1. Like JB I initially wondered why you would paint something that's black to start with but I completely get how one rough area can let the whole bike down - and those indicators etc look fabulous.

I think this is going to one of those rare restorations where the bike ends up looking even better that new.

The other Paul G thanks for your comments really appreciated. I'm hoping it turns out well.
Cheers

Just seeing this thread now, been away from the forums for a while! You could be looking at my 1100GS with those before pics! Maybe it's the Dublin air... Fantastic job, can't wait to see the final result!

Thanks bazjazz , think you're right about the air but I don't think it's just the Dublin air:beer:

Finally

Few photos of finally adding bits back on
