Sympathetic top box ideas please R80gs

Finally finished the racketeering necessary to fit an old K100 or R100 tourer small top box to my R100GS. I don't think it looks too bad...

If you zoom in on the rear end you can see what I did to use the standard GIVI mounting plate.
Made a couple spacers and then used all the standard GIVI mounting metal straps.
Worked well on three GS's that I used it on.

I’ve bought a universal Givi rack and 2 threaded rubber mounts as spacers but cant get the original givi plates to hold underneath properly. I’m just sourcing some alloy plates to give me more stable to bolt beneath original rack.

On the rough tracks oz I found I needed something a but more substantial. After using a couple of boxes.

So I fixed a piece of black painted hardwood to the top of the rack so that the top of the wood was level with the rear lip, then screwed the mounting plate to that.

Worked for a short time but the mounting plate was not stiff enough as the catch at the rear ends up taking a major proportion of the load, and the flexing fixing plate started to crack.

Stiffening things up with 40x10mm flat bar backing a new plate helped a bit but then the latch at the rear becomes the weak spot.
The final answer was to screw down through the base of the box and the mounting plate into the wood block.

Used a couple of cable clamps over the loop at the back of the seat and into the box too, after you have lost a couple of boxes you tend to go for belt and braces.

I grafted a ally plate to the rack with the GIVI lock and mushrooms fitment kit. My puncture kit and compressor goes under the plate. They may not look flash but they are very practical = unlike the little poxy boxes with "knives and Forks" in um

Love the ammo box sneaked in there. Hadn't noticed that previously does it form part of an armed response system for errant nair-do-wells on you travels?

Hi. I've just about to put a Explorer Case on my X country. They are similar to Peli cases, as suggested above.

Similar to this one, but theres a few about

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Green-Ex...790105?hash=item52451c22d9:g:2bYAAOSwxSNfibfO

I didnt want a huge box on the back but just something secure for day trips/small tours, I'd put saddle bags on for bigger trip.

To make it removable I will cut four slim slots in its base and thread through a couple of ratchet straps, so the ratchet stays in the box and the strap just exits and reenters as it wraps round the rear carrier frame.

I'm sure it will be waterproof and secure enough for day trips.

Just a thought, it has a nice profile to it rather than a huge fridge on the back.

Cheers Ali

For anyone interested I have a modded subframe ,
It’s had the rear most section that kicks up removed and rewelded flat.
Far better for fitting a top box if that’s your thang.:D
I had the mods done, had it powder coated in satin black but never fitted it.

I picked up a Peli-type case for mine
Not huge but enough for 3 weeks in France
Mikey’s rear frame would make a better job of it though...

Hi - could you share how you mounted the K100 top box mounting plate/rack to the R80 rear rack ?

Hi, I bought the top box, rack and mounting plate. After a refurb, I made a couple of brackets out of L shaped aluminium extrusion to span from the grab rail and rear rail to the rack mounting points. I used stainless P clips to attach to the rails, and turned some spacers with angled faces to suit the underside of the rack. I probably haven’t made that very clear; I’ll try and get some pictures up here.
