Barn find - 1994 Strada 1000 - recommissioning.......

Best I get it back to my garage then & pull it apart.

It's great that everything is still available for old Italian bikes.
And not at silly prices.

I spose keeping things simple & using the same engines, frames & many cycle parts the same for many years, makes it easier to supply parts.
Even years after the bikes were registered.

Try getting lots of parts for old Japanese bikes.

First ride today.

Home to my garage, the long way of course :green gri

Rode lovely in a Guzzi way :D

Nothing bad thank feck, engine, gearbox & drive train are all Perfic.

So it looks like I got away lightly with buying a stored & unridden for 11 years.
( not something I would recommend )

Luckily no major faults.
With just a points clean up & jump pack to start it
And with just 3 replacement brake pipe to be able 2 ride it.

Now on my bike lift awaiting the ' Ash ' treatment... ;)

Are you going electronic ?

Maybe later.. ;)

Got to look into which electronic ignition system would be best for this bike..

Funny thing is all the information available states this model only came with electronic Ignition.

But I know the ones used on some Guzzi's were problematic so lots of owners went for the Lucas Rita unit available at the time.

So maybe this one was converted to points / condensers.. :nenau
Guess I'll never know..

The 'legend' i heard was that the 'Motoplat' electronic ignition fitted to many could fail. That Guzzis electrical reputation was bad enough and that Guzzi took the company to court and broke them. Then bought the company and made them make the units properly!
Whether this is true or not i dont know. :nenau
My Cali had Motoprat / i replaced that with Rita. I still had trouble / replaced that with a U.S. "Dynatek" and two HT coils as fitted to old VW Beetles.
This gives a very strong spark :thumb2 ... but mine STILL misfires and farts on rare occasions - dropping to one cylinder for no reason i can find!
I live with it knowing it'll kick in on two after a while - especially if i lift the plug cap and make the spark jump the longer distance.
No logic to this whatsoever - but sure, it's a Guzzi! :D

Dynatek needs the old Distributor 'tower' / Rita does not. Dyna is dead easy to fit and set up.*

* dead easy for my hands Ash - not being funny but you may need (literally) a hand with the fiddly bits.
And Dyna is obviously idiotproof on the electrics side if i managed it. :blush After fitting She started up first prod of the starter and has never been touched since - no need. :)

FWIW I fitted a Dyna to my T3 Cali last year and apart from me fucking up the timing (180' out ) it was a piece of piss to fit and the bike now starts on the button every time and runs lovely. I kept the original coils.

On paper a Dyna set up should be less than perfect as it still uses the distributor so won't, in theory, give as accurate timing as a crank mounted unit but, FFS, this is a ditch pump engine we're talking about not a 180bhp IL4!

No issues so far :)

Strada has been resting my garage as I've been Giving my arms / hands a rest. :(
A blinding deal came up 4 sale on the Guzzi club forum.

The complete GIVI luggage system

For the princely some off £100.
( after a haggle )

The back end of my Guzzi Strada & the SP3 are the same.

Keys matched as well.. :bounce1

So these will fit straight on

Bike must of sat in something damp, as the front wheel is perfect, but will paint to match the rear..

Masking up both sides of a wheel & tyre is a complete ball ache. :blast ( first piccy )
Especially with my u/s hands & arms. :(

There's masking tape under the newspaper, both sides, cut tight & trimmed into the wheel rim..
As well as masking off the valve, balance weights & wheel centre's
Newspaper is only there to stop over spray on the tyre.

And what made it 10 times worse was 1" masking tape that wouldn't come off the cardboard core clean, now anyone that has had damp / knackered masking tape will know what I'm talking about FFS :tears

2nd, 3rd pictures painted & resting in my made up holder.
( workmate with an old single sheet over it. ) ;)

Last picture painted, lacquered & resting in the sun... :)

One feck up today, I dropped the bevel box. :(
Luckily at low height, but still broke about a 30mm off the alloy edge.

Took it to my mate, who's son is a welder.
So hopefully he can mend it, one minute it was in my hand the next it was on the deck.

Since my accident I do drop things for no reason & cannot explain why or how..
Things just end up on the floor :tears :tears :tears

I had just finished sanding off the painted alloy casing, ready for masking & painting..
( Poor paint in piccy )
