Long story short - my 17yr old son is in the local chav hangout supermarket carpark and pulls up to begin a 90deg reverse park into a bay when one of his "associates" steams up behind him resulting in them coming together, other lad says my son ran into him and wants him to pay for the damage, my son says the other lad actually ran into him. Other lads mother is messaging me threatening to go to insurance and claims he has 5 witness' to say its my sons fault, these are all his good mates
Obviously my son doesn't want insurance involved but also doesn't see why he should front up the cost of the other guys repairs. My son has a black box fitted.
What do peeps think the outcome will be if insurance gets involved? He's only been driving for 4 months so really doesn't need this.

He needs to notify insurance, incase they claim for personal injuries. Also, black box telemetry will prove, one way or other, when it confirms son's position, perhaps you should mention implications for false statements and possible fraud convictions

Could there be cctv footage of the incident ?

Insurance route will cost both heavily for an extended period as both drivers future premiums will be loaded.

From a legal perspective ins companies should be informed either way but i wouldn't recommend it.

I think the one reversing - is on his back feet from the start.

In the absence of an independent witness - it could go entirely against your lad.

Private land so one could argue the toss .......... on the other hand I suggest as above reminding the Mother any claims against her sons insurance would make the next year rather eye watering

The independant witness's my son has contacted have said other guys fault or 50/50, not one said my sons fault.
Quiet word with the mother about to happen.

I think it may all depend on how eloquent each witness is, and if he sticks to observations rather than giving an opinion as to percentage fault.

Black box should be able to satisfy all queries!

If stationary / brake handbrake applied before the "Jolt"

I would be pretty sure that it has an accelerometer to record high speed manoeuvres or impact information

perhaps wisest to say that you are going to have the black box interrogated :thumb

Son and the "associate" have agreed no need to do anything more and sort there own motors now, sense has prevailed, not that either of them have much of the common type!

Hopefully the insurance companies are none the wiser about the incident....otherwise both will be compelled to disclose the bump for the next five years which is the last thing any of them will need financially.

if the other lad has a black box would be wise to have that info to so you can compare

Son needs to be advised not to play out around 'boy racer' hangouts ........... it will end in tears .

Little f*ckers always egg each other on to more and more stupid and dangerous behaviour , its a pain in the arse visiting parents and asking them to come down to the hospital to identify the remains of their children.

Or explaining to them that their teenage son is in custody for killing someone (often passengers) due to their manner of driving.

Accrueing a Section 59 warning and a vehicle seizure will hit him financially never mind the long term results of 6 points and a return to learner status

Unfortunately boys will be boys , I doubt there are many of us that didn’t “mess about” on 2 or 4 wheels when we were similar ages . Some only in a small way , some take it too far. Some will always get away with it others sometimes don’t .

My mate a few doors down put his Mini through a hedge showing off to his girlfriend . His dad helped him fix it and get it back on the road, all part of growing up. Another mate who I sold my first Mini to put it on its roof just a few weeks later . Another one, who always drove too fast, took his Escort up to the Lakes with some mates for the weekend . I said before he left that those narrow lanes with dry stone walls need to be respected & I bet he comes back on a low loader ......... he did :blast

I did a fair bit of dicking around on 4 wheels age 17-19 but I had a far greater sense of my own vulnerability and also a bit of luck so I got away with it . On 2 wheels I was far more sensible even from 16 and I was 25 before I got my next car and had grown up by then.

My daughter is just 9 but talking to some friends recently who have a teenage son who had started driving and they said it was one of the scariest times of their whole lives, lying awake at night whilst he was out in the car somewhere and wondering when/if he’d come home , would they get a call ?

Will the insurance company not want to know what the bump involved that shows up on the box?

When I was 17, during the school summer holidays, I had a friend a week killed, truthfully, I rode no differently from them.

At that age you are indestructible, having done several young driver days, explaining the dead are the lucky ones, wearing nappies and being spoon fed for the rest of their life, can help focus the mind.

Private land so one could argue the toss ..........

What has the land got to do with it?

When your bestest bikermate rocks up on his gleaming new awesome £20,000 steed, which you accidentally knock over on your drive with your 20 year old Honda Civic, will you be asking your insurer to settle his repair bill? Or will you:

A. Be diving into your wallet

B. Be telling him to go do one

C. Something else?

D: None of the above...........

I think a ‘public access car-park’ is covered by each person’s insurance - be it fully comp or 3rd party only.

If you had a vehicle which was used entirely on your own land - you would not require specific insurance on it - BUT - if you drive your car to a public access space - you will require insurance and it continues to be in force
