In the six years that I've owned my Xchallenge I've been really impressed with how good it has been as an all rounder for touring, lane riding and tackling twisty back roads but since changing job, I can't join my commute up with green lanes as easily as before.

I used to ride a drz400 supermoto and I'm toying with the idea of getting a second set of 17" wheels for my Xchallenge to see what it like as a lazy(ish) supermoto.

The questions I have are:

What width of 17" rim do people recommend for front and rear wheels?
What tyres do folk recommend for tarmac work?
And has anyone got a spare xcountry or xchallenge rear hub or wheel for sale. I think I will need an xmoto side stand as well

Many thanks

Dave

Don’t know much about xchallenges, I have a yamaha XT660X supermoto and the tyre sizes on that are:- F. 120/70/17 58H R. 160/60/17 69H, you may be able to go to 170, I have maxxis supermaxx sport fitted, had the ST Sport touring version on my Baghira, not as sticky but still ok.

You need to speak to John Nicholson on here.

Is the swing arm the same as the X-Moto? If it it is, there's your answer for the rear rim/tyre size

Ditto for the triples/forks on the front end.

You might, if your lucky find the X-Moto wheels slot right in, in which case all you need to do is fab a spacer for the front caliper.

As for tyres, Goldspeed do some super sticky tyres, either Inters or Wets. I used to race on their tyres but they have recently been made road legal. The pictures below are their road legal Inters on my old Husky.

They grip more than you could ever imagine and the handling is super fast but lovely and predictable..............don't expect much mileage out of them though :D

The XChallenge and XMoto both share the same swinging arm

Rear wheel on the XChallenge is a 2.5" x 18" with a 120/70 18 tyre fitted

Rear on an XMoto is a 4.5" x 17" with a 160/60 17 tyre fitted

Front wheel on the XChallenge is a 1.6" x 21" with a 90/90 21 tyre fitted

Front wheel on the XMoto is a 3.5" x 17" with a 120/70 17 tyre fitted

There is a pair of seconhand XMoto wheels on eBay along with the front and rear spindles and spacers

If you go for the cast XMoto rims you will also need the larger diameter brake disc as well as the brake caliper adapter (BMW part 34 51 7 696 702) as the XMoto uses a 320mm diameter brake disc and a 4 piston caliper at the front whereas the XChallenge uses a 300mm diameter disc and a two piston caliper

On the tyre front I use Avon Storm 3D X-M

Here is a close up pictures of the front wheel/brake set up on my XMoto

Thanks for the posts fellas and to John for the technical details, I will keep an eye out for a rear wheel or hub so that I can get a set laced up

Thanks Again, Dave
