Continued from the Guzzi Shit thread.............

Good old heavy Guzzi throttles; there are various ways people have of addressing this, one being fitting modify (or cut down) throttle springs.

They are heavy throttles, there's no getting away from it, but I've generally found keeping cables clean/lubricated, ditto with the throttle assembly and careful routing equals a silky smooth and acceptably heavy throttle. In the past, I've also replaced cables on a regular basis, pretty much treating them as consumables.

My current squeeze though has been woefully neglected in this respect so Johno's/Kaisters comments on throttles gave me the kick up the arse I needed and not before time, my cables are shagged.

New Venhill 'Featherlites' ordered at £30 posted for two

Stripped naked and ready to go

<a href="https://andressotoscastello.smugmug.com/UkGSer/n-5CFLKf/i-SjThpgP/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-SjThpgP/0/94aad9f1/XL/i-SjThpgP-XL.jpg" alt=""></a>

With everything stripped I polished the throttle slides, cleaned and polished the bar end, inside the throttle grip and the throttle mechanism itself. Then a thin smear of light oil on the bar end to lubricate the throttle grip.

The steel 'bends' on the throttle end of the cable fit into recesses on the throttle assembly but are very slightly too big to fit into the recess easily so a little light cleaning up with a file was needed

<a href="https://andressotoscastello.smugmug.com/UkGSer/n-5CFLKf/i-QRTmhMf/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-QRTmhMf/0/b2399e55/XL/i-QRTmhMf-XL.jpg" alt=""></a>

Then working out the best way to route the cables....... I've always struggled to find a 'clean' way of doing it. The cable easily gets trapped under the tank and can have a sharp bend at the top of the carb. Here's the old cable showing what happens over time (both cables were like this)

<a href="https://andressotoscastello.smugmug.com/UkGSer/n-5CFLKf/i-Xb8n8QF/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-Xb8n8QF/0/d6922b16/XL/i-Xb8n8QF-XL.jpg" alt=""></a>

<a href="https://andressotoscastello.smugmug.com/UkGSer/n-5CFLKf/i-FpTmstm/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-FpTmstm/0/ccb6c5fe/XL/i-FpTmstm-XL.jpg" alt=""></a>

So, I've tried something a bit different this time and moved the tank mounting rubbers a bit, passing the cables under the edge of all three hoping this will mean they are less able to get trapped.........only time will tell if it works but it seems good at the moment

<a href="https://andressotoscastello.smugmug.com/UkGSer/n-5CFLKf/i-WtMWxFx/A"><img src="https://photos.smugmug.com/photos/i-WtMWxFx/0/dfe75f40/XL/i-WtMWxFx-XL.jpg" alt=""></a>

I've now got to balance the carbs but it's pissing down outside so that's for another day. In the mean time the throttle feels silky smooth and is a vast improvement on how things were.

I'd be interested to know if there are any better ways to route the cables from anybody out there :)

Nice one Andres:thumb, I’ll be doing mine in a few weeks. It’ll be interesting to see how mine is routed now and to see any variation that can be achieved to sort what is a minor but irritating problem. Thanks for posting......:beerjug:

Ps. I’m still waiting to hear back from that company in the states re. the linkage issue.

This is what Guzziology has to say on the subject, not terribly useful but interesting none the less............

My SP3's throttle was transformed with the replacement Venhill cables...

Not a cheap option but certainly worth it...

:thumb

I must just be very lucky?

Never had any issues with a heavy throttle - mines always been grand. :nenau
Same with the clutch - many have pulled my lever and cursed me coz it's so light. :duck:

But the gear linkage ~ Jeezus H. Christ! sloppy, very sloppy. :(
Watching with great interest here. :)

I've only got your photos to go by, but instead of having a sharpish bend close to the carb top in order to go under the frame , could the cables run parallel to the frame for a bit towards or even past the cylinders, then take a gentle and smooth route under the frame ?

.........

Every Guzzi I've ever owned has had a 'T3 tank' so maybe that's it (you've a different tank haven't you?). Re the clutch, yeah similar here, I've never had a Guzzi with a heavy clutch and have never really understood why they have a rep for that?

Yeah, you'd like to think so but the seam on the bottom of the tank hugs the frame rails (there are two rails, not a central spine) really tightly. If you look at the photo below that seam is approx 4mm away from the rail and actually touching the rubber block that the tank seats on so the only way of routing the cable is to bring it inside of the rail and then out to the carb where the tank has a rise towards the rear. If you ran it below the tank and outside the rails then it really would have a tight radius down to the carb ~ hopefully the picture explains better than I can.........

Then again, I'm more than willing to accept it's just me.........it usually is :D

Hmm, good point; i had a SP1, "Cock Up and Spews"* special 1979/80? had the flatter tank - now the throttle was a little heavy / but that clutch was a bastid!

*a.k.a: "Coburn and Hughes". Unless you lived in or around Luton and had to deal with them.

Their adverts were cool though (and all over my bedroom wall!)

They were mega cool ads....always made me wonder who could afford to buy the bikes, and to maintain the women. :D

Back to your cable issue...I see what you mean going by your description and later photo, but I was meaning and wondering about running the cable outside of the tank for at least a few inches.....looking at that picture again, if you ran the cable between the tap and the tank body, alongside the tank for a bit, and then tuck under it ?

IYKWIM.

Also, looking at the carb top.....are your carbs possibly leaning in towards the engine a bit too much ?
That would create issues with cable bends at the top.

I'm only trying to help.....enjoy it while it lasts. :D

Been off the mushrooms long enough to sort the cables yet ? :D

If so, what was the outcome ?

Now routed like this guy and all is good :)

Ackshoealy.................I'm quite happy with how I routed the cables. You can turn the throttle with just 'thumb & forefinger' and it pings back to the stop as soon as you let go. I think the cables are as good as I'm going to get.

It's still heavy but 'heavy, smooth' which is fine (I'm not pissing about with modified springs); a proper Guzzi :)

:D:D:D. What seems like a lifetime ago; my mate once passed me the broken throttle cable to work from my perch on the back; great days being young and daft. How we managed to get into Hathersage will always be a mystery.

.............and riding home with broken clutch cables; stalling at every set of lights (or running them :augie) then bumping the bike to get going again. It's a wonder we're all still alive............. :D

Rode home from Fort Dunree in Donegal back home to Islandmagee and the only bit I F***ed up was the last 90 degree left turn about a mile and a half from my house Fun times :aidan
