Picking up the battered, neglected remains of an airhead GS tomorrow evening, hoping to bring it back to some form of useful vehicle. Im not completely new to airheads but having little (read 'no') money ill be doing as much work as possible myself, and its unlikely to be a full back to factory spec commission. There will be no a-la-mikeyboy gorgeous showroom finish builds here.

It wont be a quick build, I have other ongoing projects, but thought it might be of interest to some to log it here. For my own reference if nothing else!

Only seen one pic, very little detail from seller, from pic i can see missing tank, seat, carbs, caliper, lights etc so will be looking for bits as and when they pop up. Currently looks to have been cobbled together with some random ignition, switch gear and controls.

No V5 or plates, or history of any kind. Ill need to apply for one using the VIN I presume. I dont yet even know what it is. From the fork legs looks like some kind of bumblebee R80 or R100.

Ill take more pics of whats there and whats not when i get it back to my workshop tomorrow evening.

Well, you certainly have quite a job on your hands. Looks like its been a donor bike fir someone, parts taken off to keep another bike or two going. Hopefully you post pics. Probably worth checking state of engine out before you throw money at it. Will be good to see pics as you work through it.

Picked the bike up yesterday and now sat in my workshop. It was late when i got back, so didnt get to inspect too closely, but did take some pics. First impression is that the rims and spokes look in better order than I would have expected from the rest of the bike's condition. Has a kick start gearbox, were these standard fitment on the '88 GS?

Missing a load of stuff:

Carbs
Airbox
All handlebar controls and switches
Main wiring loom
Engine front cover
Fuel Tank
Seat
Lights
Indicators
Front mudguard
Instrument cluster
Brake caliper

Theres *zero* history or paperwork, owned and used as a field/farm bike by the seller's late father. Seller tasked with emptying the sheds but knows nothing of any note. I will need to apply for a V5C from DVLA with just the VIN, which returns the following data:

Chassis number: 6279218
Vehicle code: 0473
Series: 47E1
Model: R 100 GS
Body type: ohne
Catalog model: ECE
Production date: 1988 / 05
Catalyzer: NONE
VIN: FILLER17II6279218
Prod. Date: 1988-05-06
Type: R100GS (EUR)
Series: 247 (R Series)
Engine: 2ZYL
Displacement: 1.00
Power: 44kw / 60hp
Transmission: Manual
Colour: AVUSSCHWARZ ZIERL (640)

stamped on engine:

20/88/0047
102VD
