I don't know how this will affect our Intrepid Adventurers, but according to
BBC News, it looks like there's been a coup in Mauretania.

Let's all be careful out there.

Err, at the moment it's not too good but knowing how these things change it could be fine next week. This is taken from the Foreign Office site today (6/8)

SUMMARY

* We have received reports that a successful coup has occurred in Mauritania on 3 August. We currently advise against all travel to Mauritania until the situation becomes clearer.

* There is no British diplomatic presence in Mauritania, although there is still a British Honorary Consul in Nouakchott. If against our advice you decide to travel to Mauritania, you should take strong security precautions. Events could move fast and violence could erupt at short notice. You should take particular care in public places and avoid all crowds and demonstrations.

* Mauritania shares with the rest of the region a threat from international terrorism to visibly western and British interests. You should be aware of the global risk of indiscriminate attacks, which could be against civilian targets, including places frequented by foreigners.

* Travel in Mauritania can be difficult. Outside the main urban areas, there are currently only three paved roads. Conditions are otherwise poor for overland travel. Domestic flights operate between the main towns.

* We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling.

Looks like it's settling down a tad.

This is the current advisory;

Still Current at: 10 August 2005
Updated: 10 August 2005

This advice has been reviewed and reissued with amendments to the Summary, Political Situation, Local Travel and General sections. We no longer advise against all travel to Mauritania.

SUMMARY

* A coup occurred in Mauritania on 3 August. The situation in the country appears to have stabilised somewhat, but further instability cannot be ruled out. We advise that British nationals visiting Mauritania exercise caution, and pay close attention to developments in the country. Travellers should be flexible, and be prepared to alter their plans at short notice.

* There is no British diplomatic presence in Mauritania and you should register your presence with the British Honorary Consul in Nouakchott. You should inform the Honorary Consul if you intend to travel to areas outside the main cities of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou.

We'll keep an eye on it though.......but on the ground, the actual presence of the government was limited to the borders anyway....plus a few gun-toting checkpoints on the roads.
