rear shock fefurbishment

Nightmare with ESA one...
This is the first time I've come across so much rust in the dumping adjuster!
I have one spare stepper and planning to refurb the better one as it didn't disintegrate in my hands after removal.
They are almost impossible to get...
We see how it goes
More photos later this week...

Did they live in the sea Denz0, even the paint is stripped, how many KM,s did they do

This is 2006 RT not sure what mileage but I can certainly find out.
Contacted the GSParts.de and they quoted me 220euro plus delivery for one of the steppers telling me they have only one left..
I'm trying to find chainisium replacement that will calibrate as normal for the future marine application just not sure if it's possible only time and field tests will tell.

Good luck Luke you are a star, and I am really enjoying this thrad, and winter coming my shocks will be over, if not just for a spring change.

I have a new R1200ST ESA shock (without preload motor), complete with new stepper if you're interested?

PM me if interested

I've moved things on since I first started this post.
The very good news with springs upgrades!!!
I can get them now at a very good price! As always I'm passing the discount on to the forum members.
Springs come in any colour and rate
Some collars need to be made to make it all work but it's well worth the effort.

Liking this more and more so I can just change the springs on my 2017 ESA shocks and all will be plug and play, am I understanding correctly Luke....and for me no need to pass on discount, you have to have a pint somewhere.....:beerjug:

That's right! They will fit standard Sachs shock from what I've seen LC comes with 160N/mm spring.10% the upgrade will be 175N/mm and this will probably suit 100-110kg rider but this would have to be confirmed only one collar would have to be made for the top this will also prevent spring scraping on the preload adjuster (as standard spring moving up and down scratches the preload adjuster surface for some reason they remove that collar from latest designs )

That’s looking excellent! I’m very tempted to change the spring and have the esa shock rebuilt even though it’s fully functional! On my 2012 gsa. loaded on twisty roads ridden spiritedly it was tying its self in knots! I’m around 100+kg with gear on.

Sounds good to me Luke that is the weight I would rather have, than the puny 80kgs set weight.

Refurb successful!
After a week of battle with corrosion finally, shocks are back to the original glory.

I had my ESA units refurbed by a specialist including a small extra charge for rebushing in my front shock due to a worn/collapsed bush. I hadn't even noticed during riding ??

Ever since then it has ridden a little bit firmer and more 'bouncy' over rippled surfaces (but holds a line well enough.)

I was considering buying a set of Wilbers WESA as part of my forthcoming bike refurb. Denzo, now I have seen your work and the chance to fit an optimal replacement spring more suited for my weight and style, I shall reconsider.

......Those WESA units don't come cheap.

Bush could be tricky to diagnose there is only 2mm of rubber the only way to see this is by lifting the front wheel of the ground and moving the swing arm up and down.
Aftermarket shock is not that much different from the factory shock
The only difference is in valving.
But the standard shock can be revealed as well
When I get my shock dyno I will be able to measure the force on the best aftermarket shock and try to much this dumping force on the standard shock.
If that makes sense...

The selling point for all the aftermarket suspension is adjustment and spring tailored to your weight.
But I can change the spring on the stock shock as well.

always good to have nice Öhlins or Tractive suspension they look great but will you use 100% of that potential?
Or you get it because of stiffer spring? That only cost £55 if you install it on your own shock?

I do like these shock rebuilds more and more great work Luke, 1 question when the heavier spring is fitted do the shocks have to be calibrated again, or just plug and play again and sensors do their job.

If the shock is disconnected in the soft settings and the stepper don't need to be touched "no rust" then it will be plug and play
I would always recommend calibrating the shock however if the ESA was working fine I will be just fine.

No soft settings on mine Luke only Min-Max-Auto what would you say would be the best to take them off, out of the 3 choices.

Minimum and one rider. Preload adjuster is in 0 position and valving open

Great thread. Thanks for sharing. I too will bookmark this.

One question. When you talk about the rider weight. I take it that refers to the rider in full gear? Or is it the person's weight before any gear is on? I'm expecting the former... which makes 80kg look a bit daft?!
