I am looking for a second touring bike as have a ktm enduro for offroad riding

I have been offered a clean and cheap 2005 r850r. had one years ago and was a nice bike to cruise along on

however I always wanted do a scrambler conversion over time, not right away. Just allow me do few gravel roads and odd dirty lane.

plus I like the look of them.

to increase the ground clearance what is the difference between the GS and R models

I can see

1 - 17/19 spoked wheels
2 - Rear paralever torque arm
3 - gs foot pegs and pedals for upright position
4 - standard endure bars instead of dual road bars.

Cheers

If put gs shocks in take it stock stanchions would be too short

Front wishbone is different, but a straight swap as I have a Rockster one fitted to my GS.

Because it looks so much nicer than the pressed steel original...

It made no difference to the handling as the fork bridge is what makes the difference between the GS and R.

Would I be able fit gs shocks on a r bike using original
Stanchions or are they too short

I would suggest that you check the respective part numbers at realoem.com to answer that question.
