my local tyre shop balances everything, but walks through to the car fitting bay and has to use the car balancer for the rear wheel on the gs. i imagine its a similar story for most single sided wheels

Mine does the same. The front wheel goes on his static balance jig. The back is put on a car wheel dynamic balancer. The centre hole is quite small so not all machines can do the job. Bike can feel like pogo stick if its not done.
My question is as per the other thread - liklihood of an absence of weights contributing to FD problems (given the 34 million rear wheel rotations that occur over 40k miles)
