At last I've arrived back in the UK for a few weeks, so it was straight into the garage to see how dirty I could get.

So this I the bike purchased unseen.

It's a low mileage R1200RT-P 2007, just got over 32,000 on the clock.

Damaged seat
Non working fuel strip - who would have guessed.

With limited tools - all my good tools are in South Africa I managed to remove most of it. I ended up getting stuck on 1 bolt....just not having the right tools for the job is a pain.

So I drove the bike with most of the rear missing to a shop to looses the 'last' bolt.

The panniers where stripped and the barrels removed and re-coded to the bike key, what run that was, taking apart the sprung mechanism and trying to put it back together.

The locking pins where full of dirt and didn't move at all, it took some serious cleaning to get the barrels out.

Oh rear foot pegs and tail tight has now all been assembled......I just need to do some serious cleaning and tightening up.

The only thing outstanding is the top box - just another level of frustration, rear additional mud guard and to change the rear indicators to white.

I can do without the fuel strip for now, or should I say this trip, and will probably set about replacing it on my next return in August.

Otherwise job almost done!

To sum it up....the best fun I've had all year!

There is a market for those police panniers-- sold mine on ebay. One set went to a guy who wanted some tidy police type panniers for his bike. The other set went to a company in York that deals in ex-authority bikes.

Just replied to your other thread regarding the topbox lock.
Ive converted a couple of rtp's and did a couple of threads on here showing the conversion.
 
Ditch as many of the authority connectors and wiring as you can - makes cleaning and maintenance much easier (but seal all truncated wires) and get rid of auxiliary battery and oil cooler fan

Fit the later screen with winglets to reduce shoulder buffeting

Keep front engine bars - DAMHK

If the bike comes with front “blues” lights mounts put your DRLs on them
